The Zumwalt Project Steward participates in preserve operations including the maintenance, management and development and coordination of conservation programs.  This may include one or more of the following functions:
• Leads work teams and supervises staff
• Furthers the Conservancy’s strategic goals
• Implements  preserve management plans
• Maintains preserve areas frequented by the visiting public
• Removes exotic species and/or monitors & researches species
• Maintains tools and equipment
• Operates heavy machinery
• Opens and closes preserve to the visiting public

The Zumwalt Project Steward is a member of the Northeast Oregon team that implements conservation action on Nature Conservancy lands in Wallowa county.  The work involves many aspects of land management, as well as management administration of buildings, vehicles, and stewardship tools.  It also includes  the direct supervision of volunteers, contractors and seasonal staff involved in stewardship work Essential functions of the work include:
• Leading the implementation of the ZPP and CLR Weed Management Plans. This includes the development and oversight of weed management contracts and budgets, serving as the primary point of contact for weed management contractors, and improving the Weed Management plan as knowledge is improved. Also includes working closely with staff, regional agency partners, contractors and volunteers to develop funding sources, survey and control weeds, and summarize and report results.
• Development  and administration of the Conservancy’s volunteer program in Wallowa county. This will include coordination of annual member work parties, Clear Lake Ridge volunteer caretakers, and other volunteers including OYCC, Aspen Adopters, and Americorps. May also include developing annual objectives and day to day supervision of AmeriCorps stewardship staff based in Enterprise.
• Coordinate the use and maintenance of all TNC facilities and equipment. This includes the development and implementation of calendars and  administration related to the Enterprise office as well as other buildings, equipment and the vehicle fleet.  Responsible for ensuring maintenance of all buildings, utilities, radio systems, vehicles, and equipment necessary to accomplish project goals at CLR and ZP Preserves, including development and tracking of facilities budgets. Works closely with other staff and volunteers to cooperatively maintain these resources.
• Working closely with other staff to maintain and improve grazing related infrastructure on Conservancy lands.  May develop and manage budgets and contracts, and supervises volunteers involved in these activities.  Gathers and summarizes information related to the condition of grazing infrastructure. Serves as a primary point of contact for fence and other infrastructure contractors.
• Administer public uses of Conservancy lands in Wallowa county including the deer and elk hunting programs, public trails, ensuring appropriate signage, and participate in periodic education, outreach and restoration projects and events.
