Zero Carbon Britain 2 Internships

We are looking for seven interns to help with the new Zero Carbon Britain project. One internship will be running from April until November and will help with all the aspects of the project. Six subject specific internships will each be running for between one and three months over the period. Subject specific interns will need a good knowledge of the subject area in question.

Interns will serve as key members of the research team; participating in the research seminar and collaborating in writing up the findings from it, reviewing the existing literature in the field, helping to frame the analysis, finding data and acting as a contact person willing and able to answer questions on their section of the report.

It will be a great opportunity to be part of an exciting project synthesising material from leading researchers, gain experience in researching and writing a well circulated publication and spend some time in beautiful rural Wales. How much of the time you spend at CAT is negotiable, as it is very possible to do some of this work from home. We are able to be reasonably flexible about the period that interns want to commit to and where they will be based in order to do it. The internships are voluntary positions but accommodation and food will be provided for your attendance at the research seminars. There is a small bursary fund to support people who would like to volunteer but need a little financial assistance.

Further details are below. Anyone who is interested in any of the internships should send a CV and covering letter detailing their availability and background in the topic area to josie.wexler@cat.org.uk or contact Josie at this address or on 01654 703065 Ext 23 for further information.

Subject Area detail.

Context aka “the climate crunch”:

This session will look into climate change, energy security and the potential of net negative processes such as removing CO2 from the air in order to work out a green house gas reduction budget.  This “context” will frame all subsequent topic areas.

 Buildings:

This session explores potentials for re-thinking our built environment as a key part of meeting our green house gas reduction targets.

This session will look both at retrofitting existing buildings and zero carbon new build.

It will integrate some of the existing work on the potentials of each and considering the timeline for how quickly these significant improvements could come onboard with full political support.

It will provide key support for our energy modelling work by considering the resource requirements of making our housing stock suitable for a sustainable future.  Energy:This section will look at the potential resources to supply our electricity and heat demand. It will consider different methods of achieving a sustainable energy infrastructure. In Zero Carbon Britain 2 we will change from examining a single energy scenario to examining several. .

In addition to looking into alternative mixes of generation,
modelling work will quantify the embodied energy and carbon in the construction of the new energy infrastructure.

Transport:  Liquid transportation fuel and aviation are key challenges in creating a sustainable future. Transportation based emissions are also some of the strongest links with economic activity. Therefore this topic has a number of elements to balance. The possibility for modal shifts and behavioural change will be examined. Technological alternatives such as electric cars, vehicle to grid, hydrogen, biofuels and air ships will be considered.  Land Use: The Land use section will look at managing the diverse needs of land from organics to biofuels and biochar so this is sure to be a lively debate.  We have a number of partner organisations interested in this section.  With implications in planning, ownership, diet and stocking levels this session explores land-use scenarios including reducing non-CO2 emissions, the UK’s potential for biomass and exciting possibilities for carbon sequestration.   Policy and Economics:This section will integrate results from all the different areas of the report to create political and economic suggestions for Britain. The economic stimulus package is very much back on the table, creating jobs in renewable energy, sustainable land use and other best practice while building a sustainable future could provide dividends on several levels.  How much are these dividends, how do they compare to older technologies and how do we realise the potential? This seminar will investigate the array of potential political and economic solutions both on the national and international level.
