ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The Yunnan snub-nosed monkey (Rhinopithecus bieti) is one of the world’s top 25 endangered primates. TNC is acting as the leading organization and a catalyst to coordinate the range-wide conservation project to save the monkey species and its habitat, i.e. about 5% of the remained primary forest in China. It is essential for this conservation project to ensure the range-wide conservation effort to be integrated and programmatic. The Yunnan Golden Monkey Conservation Fellow will work closely with conservation and science staff to research and gather data relating to the creation of conservation planning in order to identify priorities and direct the implementation of conservation actions.  This may include some or all of the following:
• Gathers and synthesizes data relating to create conservation implementation and/or activities.
• Creates conservation plans to identify priorities and direct the implementation of conservation actions
• Conducts surveys, records data, and writes project reports
• Performs fieldwork, including ecosystem assessment and field monitoring
• Manage the project’s routine activities, including budgeting, making work plans, reporting, managing contracts, information gathering, stakeholder coordination, activity design and impact monitoring.
• Work with Chinese and American TNC staff and coordinate in-country experts/officials from Chinese academic institutions and government agencies for all sorts of project activities.
• Employ TNC’s Conservation Area Planning framework to identify the stresses, sources, conservation strategies and design the monitor system to measure the project impact. 
• Identify and mobilize active and extensive participation of all sorts of stakeholders related to the monkey conservation.
• Manage and participate in field surveys to collect biodiversity data that are indispensable for guiding the conservation process.
• Represent The Nature Conservancy and its conservation mission to the public, government officials, and research arena and coordinate the extensive involvement's of all sorts of stakeholders.
• Negotiate and manage the contracts that associate with the stakeholders’ Activities.
• Mentor the GIS information specialist to integrate and analyze all sorts of data derived from the project process.
• Work closely with TNC staff for other TNC projects in Yunnan to implement strategies and coordinate activities with local relevant government agencies.
• Collaborate with other scientists and scientific institutions to enhance TNC’s conservator
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
• Bachelor’s degree in science-related field and 2 years related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Experience conducting surveys, recording data, and writing project reports
• Experience managing databases and producing reports.
• Experience coordinating multiple projects and managing timeframes.
• Experience manipulating, analyzing, and interpreting statistical data on natural communities or environmental data on ecological communities.
• Record of peer-reviewed publications relating to species, natural communities, ecosystems, or ecosystem processes or related topics.
• Experience on writing research proposals.
• Experience working with Microsoft Office Suite software, GIS, science reference filing and management.
• Experience communicating clearly via written, spoken, and graphical means in English and Chinese
ADDITIONAL JOB INFORMATION
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
• Bachelor’s degree in science-related field and 2-3 years related experience, graduate degree and 0-1 year of experience, or equivalent combination.  Prior field experience preferred.
• Knowledge of natural systems and natural systems management techniques
• Analyzing, manipulating, and interpreting data, including statistics
• GIS experience, including ability to utilize data to create appropriate maps
• Database management skills including report production
• Completing tasks independently with respect to timeline(s)
• Managing and prioritizing tasks from multiple sources
• Working knowledge of common software applications (e.g.; Word, Excel, Web browsers). 
• Communicating clearly via written, spoken, and graphical means in English and other relevant languages
• Good home and abroad connection related to the primate research and conservation and extensive research experience in primate is preferred.
• Ability to communicate this knowledge clearly and effectively to government officials, local communities, researchers, and possible international/domestic donors and buyers.
• Strong written and oral communication skills.
• Proven ability to handle multiple assignments and projects simultaneously and to work independently.
• Willingness to work on multicultural teams.  Strong team-oriented player with demonstrated interpersonal skills. 
• Willingness to work long hours as needed, and travel frequently and in remote areas.
• Demonstrated commitment to conservation.


COMPLEXITY/PROBLEM SOLVING:
• Coordinates multiple projects with several variables, setting realistic deadlines and managing timeframes
• Interprets guidelines, evaluates information, and modifies processes to adapt to changing circumstances
• Compiles data, resolves disparities, and modifies processes to generate plans
• Resolves routine issues independently, consulting with supervisor to develop plans for resolution of complex and unusual problems

DISCRETION/LATITUDE/DECISION-MAKING:
• Work affords significant opportunity to act independently on assigned tasks with ability to exercise independent judgment
• Continuing developmental level, performs standard work requiring application of standard techniques and procedures
• Addresses issues with supervisor that affect others’ work or the overall program

RESPONSIBILITY/OVERSIGHT – FINANCIAL AND SUPERVISORY:
• May supervise/lead a small staff of Science Technicians I, interns, and/or volunteers on a project basis and be assisted by lower-level scientists.
• Purchase equipment and supplies, in consultation with  supervisor as provided for in budget
• May assist with program budget development and monitoring
• Works under minimal supervision

COMMUNICATIONS/INTERPERSONAL CONTACTS:
• Ability to work cooperatively with a number of staff and external parties, sometimes under pressure, in order to complete project work and goals in a timely manner
• Formulate ideas and communicate clearly with others, both orally and in written form
• Provide a variety of information to staff and others, contributing to conservation projects and assisting workflow throughout the organization.
• Work and communicate effectively with a diverse group of people, including scientists, preserve staff, and others, providing and obtaining needed information.

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL EFFORT:

The Science Technician III may work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain, and under physically demanding circumstances. These conditions may:
• require physical exertion and/or muscular strain
• present possibility of injury
• require long hours in isolated settings
