Youth and the Environment Coordinator/Wastewater Division Intern New England Interstate Water Pollution Control Commission (NEIWPCC) is seeking a summer intern to coordinate its EPA-funded Youth in the Environment Program (YEP), as well as other NEIWPCC Wastewater Division projects in Lowell, MA. By offering summer employment with hands-on experience, YEP encourages disadvantaged inner city students to develop interests in the environment and potential environmental careers. The YEP Coordinator is an important component of the program. The Youth and the Environment Coordinator will work under the general supervision of the Director of Wastewater & Onsite Programs at NEIWPCC. S/he will work with the City of Lowell to hire students and coordinate their summer work and educational activities with the plant supervisor at the local wastewater treatment plant. Responsibilities include interviewing and selecting high school candidates from the city’s summer job program, developing lesson plans for the afternoon session, coordinating periodic environmental field trips, and coordinating transportation of the students to the treatment plant every morning. The lesson plans are designed to further the students’ understanding of the wastewater treatment plant process utilizing information available from NEIWPCC, the treatment plant, and/or other environmental curricula. In addition to the YEP, the intern will also support our Massachusetts Title 5 Soil Evaluator Certification training program. This will include attending all sessions and assisting instructors on classroom, field session, and examination days. Some in-state travel will be required. Additional responsibilities may include the support and/or development of databases for the NEIWPCC Wastewater Division, assistance with certification files, and/or assistance with Tanks Conference preparations. The successful candidate will have proven leadership skills and experience with the Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Word and PowerPoint. Must have demonstrated organizational skills. Some understanding of Spanish preferable. Valid driver’s license and private means of transportation required.
