Task: to support WWF´s and TRAFFIC´s international efforts to save Black Sea sturgeon species

Diminishing sturgeon populations in the Black Sea have led to increased concern to conserve sturgeon species. Sturgeon populations are mainly exploited through the harvesting of caviar – unfertilized sturgeon eggs. The 2006 Action Plan for the Conservation of Sturgeon in the Danube River Basin considered all six Danube sturgeon species to be close to extinction mainly due to illegal and over-fishing, habitat destruction, and by-catch.

Since 1998, all sturgeon species have been included in the Appendices of the Convention on International Trade of Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES). However, despite these and other regulatory measures taken at international, regional and national level, illegal fishing and trade in sturgeon products persists.

In order to counteract these gloomy trends, the WWF Danube-Carpathian Programme Office has teamed up with WWF offices in Austria and the Caucasus, as well as the NGO TRAFFIC in based in Budapest to better analyse the threats and prepare measures for saving sturgeon species, e.g. by building fish passes, improving spawning habitats, promoting sturgeon hatcheries, and improving law enforcement.
