WCMC is a UK charity, based in Cambridge, which supports the United Nations Environment Programme. We work in collaboration with UNEP, under the banner of UNEP-WCMC. Our mission is to evaluate and highlight the many values of biodiversity and put authoritative biodiversity knowledge at the centre of decision-making. Since our establishment in the 1970s, the Centre has been at the forefront of the compilation, management, analysis and dissemination of global biodiversity information, and has an outstanding record of achievement.

WCMC are now seeking a permanent WDPA Manager to work with us.

The role

This role will coordinate the development and management of the World Database on Protected Areas (WDPA), a joint product of UNEP and IUCN managed at the UNEP World Conservation Monitoring Centre. Working widely with key stakeholders in IUCN and others at the Centre, this role will ensure the WDPA is maintained to the highest level of quality possible.

The responsibilities

As WDPA Manager, you will take responsibility for leading the activities of the WDPA team, managing external relationships with data providers and partners and coordinating the further development of the Protected Planet website, protectedplanet.net. You will work effectively with our Head of Programme to ensure that our work aligns with both our strategic aims and broader global initiatives, and will apply your proven fundraising and project management experience to develop and secure relevant projects.

The candidate

You will hold a postgraduate qualification in (MSc or higher) in biological or environmental sciences, geography or a related discipline and will be skilled at using your exceptional planning, management and implementation strategies to produce high quality outputs. Our association with key stakeholders in IUCN is essential to the success of this role and your experience of developing and maintaining strong relationships will reflect the skills needed to ensure the excellent level of collaboration continues. Furthermore, you will have an understanding of the essential characteristics of successful partnership-building and will be able to demonstrate the ability to work collaboratively.
