Volunteer Workshop Supervisor/Trainer

Zambian Wilderness


We are seeking an enthusiastic and experienced volunteer to provide guidance and mentoring to our workshop staff in KasankaNational Park,Central Province,Zambia. This role will be ideal for a conservation minded senior mechanic or plant fitter who relishes the challenge of working and living in a remote and wild region ofAfrica.   You will be working with a great team of people who are keen to learn from the skills and expertise that you can bring. 

 

Responsibilities

  • mentoring and supervision of workshop and infrastructure maintenance staff
  • provide technical advice on all matters regarding plant and vehicles: including, but limited to matters relating to safety, maintenance, servicing, repairs and purchasing.
  • coordinate workshop activities including task prioritisation and allocation, spare part acquisition, maintenance of tools and equipment, stocking of consumables and fuel usage.
  • initiate appropriate safe working procedures and maintenance schedules in order to improve overall serviceability of the Park’s plant and vehicles.
  • mentor drivers to improve driving safety and proficiency.
  • assist with infrastructure maintenance including well pumps, solar geysers and refrigeration equipment.
  • assist with general park management duties including driving, purchasing supplies and equipment, hosting guests, building maintenance and repairs.

 

Knowledge/Qualifications

  • minimum of 10 years experience as a plant fitter/heavy vehicle mechanic, with at least 2 years in a supervisory role.
  • higher level qualification such as a level 4 or 5 NSVQ or equivalent.
  • experience of working in a conservation role (preferred but not essential).

 

Skills/Abilities/Experience

  • advanced knowledge of servicing and repairing plant and vehicles; including engines (diesel and petrol), gear boxes, 4WD systems, electrics and panel beating.
  • experienced in arc welding, metal fabrication and machining.
  • practical and pragmatic with an ability to make running repairs using readily available resources.
  • well organised with the ability to plan and manage a workload that is often reactive.
  • knowledge of solar energy generation systems and would be desirable but not essential.

  • based at our established camp deep in the African bush on the shores of the tranquil and picturesque LakeWasaplus regular trips to our workshop in nearby LavushiMandaNational Park.  There will be occasional visits to and Lusaka.
  • plenty of opportunity to get out and enjoy everything that the Parks and their surrounds have to offer.
