The impact of climate change-related hazards in Papua New Guinea (PNG) has been increasing in intensity and frequency. Further impacts from climate change include the loss of food gardens due to extensive flooding (both in coastal and riverine areas) combined with extended periods of drought. The rising sea level is causing some of PNG‘s islands to be gradually submerged. Salt water intrusion is affecting groundwater particularly in the islands and in coastal areas, threatening domestic water supplies and agriculture. With the onset and multitude of climate change impacts, the country‘s economy, environment and people are becoming more vulnerable and are at risk of not meeting basic human development needs. Climate change puts at risk the achievement of the goals set out in PNG‘s major development plans.
These climate change impacts and emerging threats are not often understood by the public resulting in lack of action or inappropriate response measures at institutional, policy, legislative and program levels. One such group are journalists who grapple with the science of climate change particularly with how to communicate its impacts to their audiences. In developing countries including Papua New Guinea, journalists often lack resources and knowledge on how to access solid data and information on climate change. This includes writing or broadcasting climate change related stories that are concise and clear and way is often a challenge. Clearly, there are knowledge and capacity challenges for journalists in PNG to use the different communication tools to create awareness and education the public about the impacts of climate change in the country.
In recognizing this challenge, the Office of Climate Change and Development (OCCD) will be hosting a Media Workshop from 17-18 July, 2013 in Port Moresby. The workshop will target journalist and communication officers in PNG especially individuals who will represent the three media categories of photo journalism, video/documentary and print/web. The main aim of the workshop is to educate journalists with accurate and comprehensive information to guide them in reporting climate change news with a ‘human touch’.
As the workshop will focus on conveying technical climate change adaptation and mitigation knowledge, a workshop facilitator and mentor is required to support OCCD. The facilitator/mentor’s primary responsibility is to lead the preparation and facilitation of the workshop. The workshop is also expected to utilise case studies to be presented on specific projects from OCCD and its stakeholder partners will provide a hands-on opportunity to guide journalists in developing relevant stories.
Therefore, the Office of Climate Change and Development (OCCD) is issuing a Request for Proposal for a Media Workshop Facilitator and Mentor. The consultant will be based at the Office of Climate Change and Development. He/She will be under the overall direction of the OCCD’s Public Relation and Communication Manager and UNDP.
Interested applicants are to submit a proposal for this consultancy.
