Description

An enthusiastic, responsible professional person is required to co-ordinate communications and information management for the Working for Wetlands Programme and, in doing so, improve public understanding of freshwater biodiversity issues and establish SANBI as a leading voice on freshwater biodiversity.

Appointment requires a degree in Communications, Environmental Sciences and/or suitably appropriate alternative disciplines. Qualifications must be enhanced by a minimum of 5 – 7 years’ experience in communications, with at least two years in a management position. The eligible candidate will have a thorough understanding of biodiversity and environmental issues, preferably those relating specifically to freshwater ecosystems. Demonstrated ability to develop and implement communications outputs and manage both print and electronic communications, including websites, is essential. Other key skills include excellent writing, editorial and project management skills, the ability to convene and work with multi-partner teams, and the ability to synthesise and communicate technical information to lay audiences.

The post necessitates an excellent command of spoken and written English, as well as the ability to communicate fluently in at least one other official language, a valid Code B driver’s licence and at least one year’s driving experience. Willingness and availability to travel extensively, using an own reliable, suitable vehicle, are essential. Proficiency in MS Office and software for database management, websites and e-newsletters are further requirements.

Key responsibilities include: • communication planning for the Working for Wetlands Programme • information management, including stakeholder databases and websites • stakeholder liaison and partnership development • event management, including the co-ordination of World Wetlands Day events and providing support for the National Wetland Indaba • maintaining media relations • developing and distributing communication materials, including monthly electronic newsletters, posters and brochures.

SANBI offers an all-inclusive remuneration package of R344 052 per annum.
