Background Information

The South West Area is one of five Forest Services Areas in England. The Area contains some 250,000 ha of woodland and is of exceptional landscape quality, encompassing all or part of fourteen AONB’s and Dartmoor and Exmoor National Parks. Three of the twelve Nature Improvement Areas designated recently in England are located in the South West.

The Area is led by Area Director Bruce Rothnie and has a team of 28, ten of which are Woodland Officers delivering incentives and regulations as well as increasingly looking at new ways of enabling the private and third sector to deliver woodland protection, improvement and expansion.

This Woodland Officer territory includes parts of the three counties of Devon, Dorset and Somerset (currently East Devon District plus Exeter City, West Dorset District and part of the South Somerset District).

Designated landscapes include parts of the East Devon and Blackdown Hills AONB and the whole of the East Devon AONB. While it is expected that the post holder will start work in this area, all Woodland Officers territories are subject to review bearing in mind changing priorities and the need to balance workloads, and sometimes in response to the wishes of individual Woodland Officers.

The Area Office is at Bullers Hill and the post holder will be expected to be based here.

Purpose of the Job

The Successful candidate will be the Forest Service’s front-line woodlands and forestry expert in their territory. Working to established delivery principles and frameworks, effectively delivering public benefits in non-state owned woodlands.
