Background:

PECT’s Vision is to lead and support the city in establishing itself as the UK’s Environment Capital - an exemplar of how to deliver truly sustainable growth in order to improve the overall quality of life of its people, communities and environment. The Woodland Heritage in Action project forms part of the wider ‘Forest for Peterborough’ vision, enabling engagement with the heritage provided by our wooded areas: the heritage of the wildlife and species habitat to our local woods, the heritage of the history of Peterborough’s woodland, and the heritage of the traditional crafts and skills related to woodlands. The project will promote increased access to the woodland and engagement with the heritage it holds through interpretation boards, activity days and opportunities to learn heritage woodland skills.

Objective:

There are two stages to the job – development and delivery of the project. The main elements of the development stage will be: identifying and working with a woodland management consultant to create woodland management plans, community consultation, recruiting management group volunteers, developing volunteer material and procedures, produce full costing requirements and submitting second stage application to funders. The main elements of the delivery will be: recruiting volunteers, setting up and overseeing skilled woodland management groups and unskilled woodland volunteer groups; development and implementation of woodland management plans with assistance from experts; delivering community activity days, e.g. woodland craft workshops; and developing woodland interpretation boards and walks using existing iPhone app ‘Walk Peterborough’.
