The Winyah Bay Oyster Intern will be responsible for field and lab work associated with TNC’s oyster restoration living shorelines project in Winyah Bay.  The Intern will monitor the project which explores a new restoration approach with the installation of oyster castle blocks during the summer of 2010 along the shore of South Island, part of the Tom Yawkey Wildlife Center.  The oyster substrate structures will be supplemented with Spartina shoot plantings.  The intern will work with TNC staff and advisors to formulate a monitoring plan that includes methodologies to fulfill the needs of TNC and the granting agencies.  Lab space and supplies will be provided by the Baruch Marine Lab in Georgetown.  TNC seeks to determine if the oyster castle project will reduce erosion along the shoreline, promote oyster growth in Winyah Bay and support marsh plant development.  Monitoring will be conducted for approximately one year and the intern will summarize the findings in a final report for TNC within three months of the final sampling event.   We currently expect that the intern will need to commit 16-20 hours per month to this project.
