ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS |
|
The Water Quality Specialist works closely with the Williamson River Delta Preserve Director as well as conservation and science staff and leads monitoring and data gathering relating to ongoing water quality assessment/evaluation/monitoring at the 7,500 acre Williamson River Delta Preserve (WRDP) in south-central Oregon. Monitoring activities are directed to assess water quality, hydrology, and vegetation responses before and after wetland and riparian restoration. This may include some or all of the following: • Gathers and synthesizes data relating to conservation implementation and/or activities. • Conducts surveys, records data, and writes project reports • Performs fieldwork, including ecosystem assessment and field monitoring • Presents results at state-wide and regional science meetings • Coordinates with co-workers and project partners as well as works independently or in small teams in the field in all types of weather conditions. • Assists with preserve management activities such as detecting and controlling non-native plant species, participating in volunteer programs, and photo-monitoring, and helps maintain vehicles, boats, office, and shop spaces. |

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS |
|
• Bachelor’s degree in science-related field and 1 year related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience. • Experience utilizing GIS software and data to create maps. • Experience conducting surveys, recording data, and writing project reports. • Experience working with Microsoft Office Suite software. • Experience managing databases and producing reports. • Experience coordinating multiple projects and managing time frames. • Experience working and communicating with a diverse group of people PREFERRED KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS: • Bachelor’s degree in science-related field and 2-3 years related experience or graduate degree and 0-1 year experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Prior field experience required. • Experience and ability to implement water chemistry monitoring, including: installing, operating, maintaining, and calibrating water quality monitoring instruments (YSI minisondes) and collecting and processing surface water grab samples for nutrient analysis using Van Dorns, churn splitters, filters, pipettes, graduated cylinders, and clean laboratory techniques. • Knowledge of natural systems and natural systems management techniques. • Analyzing, manipulating, and interpreting data, including statistics, preferably using SAS. • Familiarity with GIS, including ability to utilize data to create appropriate maps. • Database management skills including report production and data management. • Experience operating various types of field equipment including pickup trucks, four-wheelers, and boats. • Completing tasks independently with respect to timeline(s). • Managing and prioritizing tasks from multiple sources. • Experience using computers for word processing, data management, presentation development, and statistical analysis. • Communicating clearly via written, spoken, and graphical means. |

ADDITIONAL JOB INFORMATION |
|
This is an 18 month term position. This position may work in variable (sometimes extreme) weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain, and under physically demanding circumstances. These conditions may: • require physical exertion and/or muscular strain • present possibility of injury • require long hours in isolated settings |
