The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), the nation’s largest animal advocacy organization, is seeking a Wildlife Staff Attorney for its Animal Protection Litigation section.  This position will specifically focus on litigation and other legal actions that aim to protect wildlife, including actions to protect endangered and other vulnerable species, and to prevent abusive and unnecessary practices such as the use of cruel traps and poisons to kill wild animals. The Animal Protection Litigation Section at The HSUS conducts precedent-setting legal campaigns on behalf of animals in state and federal courts around the country, and also serves as the primary line of defense against legal attacks on legislative measures designed to protect animals from cruelty and abuse. With a team of over a dozen in-house litigators, numerous outside attorneys, and a docket of more than forty active cases, the Animal Protection Litigation Section oversees the largest litigation program dedicated to ensuring the humane treatment of animals in the country. More information is available at www.humanesociety.org/about/departments/litigation/.  The Wildlife Staff Attorney will work with some of the nation’s leading animal protection lawyers on all aspects of the organization’s animal protection litigation efforts, but will focus primarily on actions to protect and improve the treatment of wildlife at the local, state and federal levels. Work will involve offensive litigation to advance protections for wildlife, as well as defensive litigation where legislation or regulations to protect wildlife are being challenged.  J.D. and two or more years of legal experience, preferably in litigation.  Candidates must have excellent legal writing and research skills. Background in animal protection and/or administrative law is strongly desired, but we are primarily interested in hiring someone who is resourceful, innovative, productive, and who will be a strong advocate for animals.  The job is located in our Washington DC office – typically candidates must be willing to relocate to be considered.

Please submit a cover letter and resume using this form or fax to 301-548-7701. This position is located in Washington, DC.
