The Wildlife Insights Program Manager based at Conservation International, is a critical position providing a variety of management, programmatic, fundraising and support functions. This position will manage many of the key streams of work associated with Wildlife Insights (WI) while researching funding opportunities, helping develop proposals, and significantly contributing to the overall shape of the Wildlife Insights secretariat. He/she will work in collaboration with the Wildlife Insights executive director, WI core partner representatives, WI standing committee heads and other key WI stakeholders (e.g. associate members).

The position will provide active management support in the main WI programmatic areas (technology, science & analytics, outreach, sustainability), steering committee meetings, and development of program guidelines. The position will also work with Moore Center staff and others (e.g. grant management staff) managing the technical side of external grants and contracts and ensuring programmatic guidelines are met (e.g. interim reports). In addition, this position will actively participate in identifying suitable donors, helping develop proposals and other fundraising materials. The position is key to ensure efficient day-to-day program operations of Wildlife Insights. The Program Manager should be able to solidly represent the Wildlife Insights secretariat and partnership at conferences, government meetings, etc. in lieu of other senior staff.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Overall management of main WI programmatic streams. This includes helping to set up meetings, following up, and synthesizing information from the four core strategic WI programs: Technology, Science, Outreach and Sustainability. The manager will ensure that all programmatic information is available to the core partners and associates of Wildlife Insights.
  • Donor identification and proposal development activities. The WI Program Manager will collaborate with CI development and the WI sustainability committee to help identify donors, request meetings, develop specific donor materials, and provide support to develop proposals (writing some sections, doing background research, putting together proposal packages).
  • Development of program guidelines. This includes helping develop written materials outlining the basic operational guidelines of Wildlife Insights including terms of reference for different roles within the partnership, governance rules and recommendations, fundraising and communication guidelines, specific materials describing the program in factsheets, websites, etc.
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • The position will be located in CI’s Moore Center for Science (MCS) in Arlington, VA.
  • Travel up to 25% of the time.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in biology, conservation biology, international development, or related field.
  • Minimum 4 years related work experience (or a combination of education and experience).
  • Familiarity with biodiversity, ecosystem services, and other information associated with conservation monitoring.
  • Solid command of project management and evaluation frameworks and tools, preferably in conservation context.
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills and ability to communicate effectively with diverse populations and units.
  • Demonstrated ability to synthesize and compile information.
  • Detailed-oriented and demonstrated project management skills.

Preferred

  • Graduate level study or Master’s degree preferred.
  • Proven ability to assist in fundraising and the strategies that led to fundraising success.
  • Experience working with both internal projects staff along with external partners.
  • Interpersonal skills needed for successful project management (e.g. ability to effectively push others above pay grade to deliver on commitments).
  • Familiarity with wildlife issues, monitoring methodologies, environmental sensors, general data management systems and the use of web portals.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • High degree of self-motivation and ability to simplify complex problems and “think out of the box.”
  • Demonstrated skills as a strong team worker.
  • Willingness to learn new skills.
  • Basic Spanish, Portuguese or French desirable.
