EIA is seeking a skilled campaigner to join EIA’s Wildlife Programme. This is an exciting opportunity for an excellent communicator who is highly organised, works well within a team, and is committed to working on global conservation and environmental issues. Working closely with the Elephant Campaign Lead and Senior Wildlife Campaigner this post will focus predominantly on elephants and ivory trade, and as required, more broadly on wildlife crime and other wildlife issues.

Salary: £32K-£35K depending on skills and experience

Role: Full-time

Main purpose of this position

The Wildlife Campaigner’s principal activities will include: conducting research and analysis; drafting materials for a variety of audiences; attending relevant national and international meetings and events; communicating effectively with key audiences for advocacy purposes; liaising with EIA staff members and external stakeholders as appropriate; assisting the team with assigned administrative, co-ordination and project monitoring and management tasks; and contributing to strategic planning.

Person Specification

Essential

Knowledge

  • Educated to degree level in a relevant field such as communications; journalism; law / public policy or science with a focus on environmental, or conservation issues.

Experience

  • Experienced in a similar role in a campaigning organisation or media / communications field.

Skills

  • Proven research skills
  • Proven written communication skills.
  • Experience of summarising complex policy or technical research and analysis into appropriate messaging and communications materials for different target audiences
  • Proven verbal communication and advocacy skills, including ability to justify rationale and recommendations
  • Personable and persuasive approach with an ability to confidently engage contacts from various fields
  • Ability to work independently with strong time-management and organisation skills, with attention to detail
  • Experience of building and maintaining effective working relationships with diverse external contacts
  • Works well in a team.

Other attributes

  • Legal right to work in the UK
  • Prepared to travel outside the UK at short notice.

Desirable

  • Working knowledge or fluency in at least one of the following languages: Chinese, Vietnamese, French, Portuguese
  • Experience in illegal wildlife trade issues, wildlife conservation and/or changing behaviour/practices.
