Wildlife Biologist

Description: Working with the BLM Winnemucca District Office, GBI is recruiting a Wildlife Biologist to work cooperatively with BLM’s biology team. The Wildlife Biologist will be provided an orientation to BLM policies, regulations, procedures, programs, and operations; particularly focusing on conducting habitat and wildlife monitoring; reviewing habitat assessment documents; and participating in the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) process, including ePlanning and document review. The position will work cooperatively as part of an inter-disciplinary team under the direction of BLM wildlife biologists and other staff specialists to:

-Assist with review of site specific habitat assessments to determine required species survey protocols that are needed;

-Conduct project specific site visits to verify habitat assessment results;

-Document wildlife, riparian, and rangeland habitat condition, quality, and quantity on BLM lands using established BLM Protocols;

-Document animal presence and movement patterns; and

-Assist with the placement and installation of thermographs.

Location:

The BLM Winnemucca District (WD) lies roughly in the northwest part of Nevada, nested in the basin and range province of the western U.S. The WD is approximately 2.5 hours east of Reno, NV and 2 hours west of Elko, NV on I-80, and 5.5 hours south of Boise, ID on State Highway 95. The WD encompasses roughly 11 million acres, of which 7.38 million acres are public lands managed by the BLM. Elevations range from approximately 4,000 feet to close to 10,000 feet.

 

 

Compensation & Timeline:

-Rate of Pay: $18.59/hour

-Field per diem when overnight camping is required

-Paid health and dental benefits

-24-week appointment beginning March 17 or 24, 2014

-Full-time, 40 hours per week (minimal overtime may be required occasionally)

Qualifications:

-A Bachelor’s degree and/or combination of education related to the position of interest (Wildlife, Natural Resources Management, Ecology, Botany or other similar degree) is required; related field experience is desirable;

-An understanding of basic principles related to the fields of wildlife, ecology, range management, botany, soil science, and/or livestock science;

-Knowledge of Great Basin ecology, preferable;

-Knowledge and ability to use various monitoring techniques to determine the presence of various wildlife species, range vegetation and animal condition (e.g. utilization, nested frequency, rangeland health indicators, water availability/ condition, habitat condition);

-Experience using GIS software (e.g.: ArcMap) to upload, create and manipulate data and maps;

-Experience working with basic Microsoft computer programs (e.g.: Word, Excel, Access);

-Ability to navigate and collect data using handheld GPS units and read a topographical map, required;

-Ability to communicate effectively, both written and orally, with a diverse audience;

-Capacity to work independently and within a team environment;

-Must be motivated, self-directed, organized, and detail oriented in order to balance multiple tasks simultaneously;

-Physically fit to work outdoors, carry personal and field equipment, and withstand the rigors of the Great Basin in the late spring, summer, and/or early fall; and

-Possess a clean, valid, state-issued driver’s license with the ability to safely operate a 4WD vehicle on- and off-road.

-Successful applicant(s) must complete a Department of Interior (DOI) Background Investigation (BI) or submit paperwork to BLM human resources indicating an active and fully adjudicated BI has already been completed prior to beginning position.
