Working collaboratively with Lake Mead National Recreation Area (LMNRA), the Great Basin Institute is seeking Wildlife and Fisheries Biologist. This position will work in the Wildlife Management Branch in the Resource Management Division primarily on fisheries management projects, but will also gain experience and training working on a wide variety of resource management projects, particularly those dealing with wildlife management issues. The Wildlife and Fisheries Biologist will participate collaboratively with several agencies in conservation activities and native fish restoration work in Lakes Mead and Mohave, including monitoring and managing to preserve a genetically diverse broodstock of razorback suckers for restoration efforts throughout the Colorado River Drainage. Primary duties will include 1) providing assistance to collect larval fish, capture, measure, and mark adult fish, 2) participate in various other fisheries related projects (sonar tracking, gill netting, habitat restoration, etc.), 3) working with a rare species of frog, various birds, mammals and reptiles, and 4) assist, on occasion, with habitat improvement projects of various kinds.

Compensation: 
o    $18.59/hour

Timeline: 
o    January 9, 2012 –December 28, 2012
o    Full time, 40 hours per week, including some weekends

Location:
Lake Mead NRA encompasses nearly 1.5 million acres in southeastern Nevada and northwestern Arizona.

Qualifications:
Required:
o    Educational background and field experience in wildlife, limnology, fisheries or related field (B.S. minimum);
o    Familiarity with the biology of fisheries and associated natural resource issues of conservation and restoration of endangered fish species;
o    Required certifications: Department of the Interior Motorboat Operator Certification Course (MOCC).
o    Experience operating motorboats, particularly at night
o    Experience in field study design, field data collection and analysis, and reporting;
o    Ability to work in remote, harsh, rapidly changing environments and in all types of weather conditions, traverse uneven terrain, and be in overall good physical condition;
o    Ability to work productively and cooperatively as part of a team to accomplish mutual goals and communicate effectively with a diverse public;
o    Posses a valid, state-issued driver’s license and clean driving record; and
o    Pass National Sex Offender Public Registry (NSOPR) and federal criminal background checks.

Helpful but not required:
o    Ability to read and interpret topographical maps and navigate using a compass;
o    Basic Aircraft Safety Training (B-3)
o    Experience operating hand-held GPS equipment for navigation and electronic field data collection;
o    Experience driving 4WD vehicles on paved and un-paved roads;
o    Posses good organizational skills and be detail oriented; and
o    Experience working in the desert southwest, or similar desert climates.
