Description

Job Title: Wilding Evidence Ecologist

Closing Date: Sunday 30th July 2023

Interview Date: W/C Monday 7th August 2023

Salary Range: £25,000 - £27,000 pa, pro rata, dependent upon experience

Term: 2 years fixed-term

Location: Kent or Remote. We have an agile working policy where staff can work from home, office or other agreed remote location, but location of employment will be the individual’s nearest Kent hub. Please note this role involves a lot of fieldwork in Kent.

Globally and nationally wildlife is in steep decline. We appear to be reaching critical tipping points around the loss of biodiversity as well as around climate change, both being interlinked. Human society cannot prosper without wildlife and healthy ecosystems.

Kent’s wildlife needs to be restored to much higher levels. We can no longer allow common things to become rare. We can only do this by restoring large-scale habitat from degraded land. Doing this will contribute to solving global problems. But we won’t be able to do this unless we publicly aspire to a higher level of impact and show that we can deliver this.

The growing Monitoring & Evidence team at Kent Wildlife Trust is leading on the critical research underpinning our new strategic direction and thinking to respond to threats from climate change and increase resilience for climate adaptation. You will be supporting this vital work through taking a leading role in supporting the delivery of existing and novel Citizen Science approaches to collecting conservation evidence, along with working alongside the other Evidence Leads to develop robust vegetation monitoring protocols to be rolled out across our Estate and new Wilder Grazing sites, supported by a training programme aimed at staff and volunteers.

Wilding Evidence Ecologist

We are looking for a highly motivated and experienced ecologist to join our Monitoring and Evidence Team. The successful candidate will possess the skills to lead and develop a varied range of monitoring projects across a range of taxa, habitats, and systems. You will be at the cutting edge of nature conservation work in the South-East in the field of landscape- scale conservation and the post presents a real opportunity to develop your experience and knowledge, and to build a professional reputation. In doing so, you will have the support of Kent Wildlife Trust’s commitment to the professional development of its staff.

In this role, you will lead the delivery of the South East Pine Marten Restoration Project monitoring programme, working closely with the project team and Monitoring & Evidence colleagues. You will be developing scientifically robust ecological monitoring programmes to establish baselines and trends and develop and deliver best practice to support the positioning of KWT as leaders in the field of conservation evidence.

You will be overseeing a range of ecological surveys through your own delivery, the management of contracts and supporting the development of volunteers as well as working closely with the wider Monitoring & Evidence team to ensure the effective capture and management of data.

Kent Wildlife Trust is the leading wildlife charity for Kent and Medway, supported by its members and staffed by committed professionals. Join our team and help us create a Wilder Kent! In return we will inspire you, listen to you, value you, treat you equally and fairly, look after your health and wellbeing and encourage flexibility from day one, enabling you to draw on these benefits to be a better, happier and more productive you.
