This position involves working with clients and on project teams involving water resources/civil engineering and related technical assignments. Assigned work tasks may include conducting wetland delineations, inventories, and functional assessments; development of permit applications; planning wetland restoration projects (including wetland construction and oversight); conducting environmental reviews; and negotiating with regulatory agencies. The ecologist will work with scientists, engineers, and other Barr staff, as well as with regulatory staff and clients. The ecologist will work to resolve ecological and regulatory constraints for projects, and prepare applications and reports required for implementation of projects and mitigation of any development impacts. The work may require short-term, out-of-town assignments in the field or in another office.


Minimum Qualifications

  • B.S. in ecology, botany, hydrology, water resources, or similar natural resources field.
  • Superior writing and communication skills.
  • Knowledge of and experience with state of Michigan and federal NEPA regulations and permitting processes.
  • Experience in wetland delineation, assessment, restoration, and establishment in Michigan.
  • GIS and basic computer skills.
  • EIS (and related environmental assessment documents) preparation experience.
  • 5-10 years of directly-related experience.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with local, state and federal regulators.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced degree in ecology or related natural resources field.
  • Knowledge of and experience with botanical and wildlife surveys.
  • Knowledge of and experience with state and federal endangered species programs.
  • Proficiency with GIS.
  • Consulting experience.
