Background

In 2010-2012 KUSKOR implemented a grant to identify Important Bird Areas in Cyprus, specifically in North Cyprus which has received relatively little ornithological attention. A new IBA on the Mesarya Plain which was recently designated by Birdlife International through this project contains one of the most important wetland sites on the island and a significant site in the region. We recently secured funding to undertake improvements to this site in order to encourage key breeder and passage migrant species and to improve the appeal of the site to birders, opening up its ecotourism potential.

Salary

5350 Euro are available for the post which includes 2 separate 5-day visits to the site during Spring (April-May) and Summer (August-September) 2015. Transport and accommodation in North Cyprus are provided.

Requirements

Successful applicants will have substantial (>5 years) experience of improving and managing wetlands for birds, including landscaping and habitat restoration, ideally in the Mediterranean region. They should have experience of undertaking similar contract consultancy work with demonstrable written reporting skills. The ability to use spatial packages such as GIS would also be advantageous.

Full driving licence.

Responsibilities

To assess the site during flooding and drought seasons and to advise on landscaping, vegetation management and placement of hides and screening.
