Purpose and General Description:

As a member of the Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC), Manitoba team, the Weston Family Tall Grass Prairie Interpreter assumes a lead role in public programming at the Weston Family Tall Grass Prairie Interpretive Centre located in Stuartburn, Manitoba.  With a special emphasis on natural history, the interpreter plays a unique role in the building and, implementation of NCC’s interpretive centre programming and services.  The position entails the utilization of leadership, public relations, and communication skills and the application of specific conservation -related knowledge in a public engagement and citizen science   education role.

The Interpreter will be responsible for the delivery of interpretive programs and tours on themes and properties related to the Weston Family Tall Grass Prairie Interpretive Centre and assist in other public program events for the general public and organized groups.  The incumbent must exercise initiative and independent judgment in working with NCC’s various audiences while maintaining an energetic and lively approach.  He/she must be able to work with minimal supervision and be available for weekend and evening work.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Deliver interpretive programs and services at NCC’s Weston Family Tall Grass Prairie Interpretive Centre;
  • Ability to communicate effectively including the talent to present programs and demonstrations efficiently and enthusiastically to a wide range or age and interest groups;
  • Capability to sense the dramatic nature of a presentation and respond to it during a performance;
  • Strong interpersonal skills including the ability to interact effectively with staff, volunteers and the general public;
  • Knowledge of the tall-grass prairie ecosystem, and natural history in Manitoba
  • Ability to perform basic research;
  • Ability to work in an organized manner, both independently and in a team environment;
  • Ability to meet deadlines;
  • Commitment to the mission of the Nature Conservancy of Canada: a conservation background or experience would be an asset;
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Skills and Attributes:

  • Grade XII Education;
  • At least one year experience working with and presenting to the public;
  • Preferred university/college student working towards a degree/diploma in history, education, science or tourism
