Position Description

The Western Wolf Coalition Montana Outreach Contractor will work closely with a coalition of conservation organizations and partners throughout Montana on a collaborative campaign to sustain Northern Rockies wolf recovery.  Members of the coalition include: Conservation Northwest, Defenders of Wildlife, the Endangered Species Coalition, Friends of the Clearwater, Idaho Conservation League, Jackson Hole Conservation Alliance, Keystone Conservation, National Parks Conservation Alliance, Oregon Wild, SCA Wild, Western Watersheds, the Wyoming chapter of the Sierra Club, the Wolf Research and Education Centre, the Wolf Recovery Foundation, and the Wyoming Outdoor Council.

 

This position requires a working knowledge of grassroots campaigns and outreach work, as well as wildlife conservation issues.  The ideal candidate has significant experience with educational outreach programs, and experience working on contentious issues with a wide variety of citizen groups.  Additionally, the Montana wolf outreach contractor must have outstanding communication and organizational skills, think creatively, and be able to work independently with minimal supervision.

Working closely with the Western Wolf Coalition Coordinator, the WWC Montana Outreach Contractor will focus on developing and carrying out educational outreach programs in Montana.  Outreach opportunities will include high schools and universities, as well as hunters, ranchers, businessmen, outfitters, faith communities, tribal members, and other groups.

The Contractor will also be expected to develop a Speakers Bureau program, which will include locating, training, and overseeing a group of volunteers who will be delivering PowerPoint presentations, showing wildlife films, and handing out educational materials about wolves to members of the general public at chambers of commerce, public libraries, nature centers, national parks, etc.

Western wolf/Montana outreach work will be based out of the offices of Defenders of Wildlife in Bozeman, Montana under the supervision of the Western Wolf Coalition Campaign Coordinator.

This position requires occasional travel and some evening and weekend work.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop and update a timeline of educational outreach opportunities throughout the state of Montana, with diverse groups of citizens, such as hunters, ranchers, businessmen, scientists, faith communities, schools, sports outfitters, etc.
  • Track all outreach efforts and interactions with the public in Excel spreadsheets
  • Develop a distribution strategy for campaign brochures within Montana
  • Report to the Western Wolf Coalition Coordinator, and work with her/him to develop an effective outreach program within Montana
  • Work with the Western Wolf Coalition Campaign Coordinator to develop a Speakers’ Bureau presentation and subsequently assemble a group of volunteers willing to give this presentation to friends and families in their homes or at public speaking events
  • Plan and give wolf informational evenings for the general public at public libraries, nature centers, etc. using the Speakers’ Bureau PowerPoint presentation and new Green Fire predator film
  • Perform all other related duties as assigned.


Qualifications

Education:  Bachelor’s (B.A./B.S.) degree or equivalent in related discipline

 

Experience:  3+ years of experience in conservation or related field, educational outreach programs, organizing, public relations or press

Other Qualifications:

 

  • Excellent communication skills as well as public speaking proficiency
  • Strong sense of initiative and ability to work creatively and independently with limited supervision (but with input from a variety of sources)
  • Demonstrated commitment to conservation advocacy and environmental protection preferred
  • Excellent time management, attention to detail, follow-through, and evaluation of progress
  • Sound problem-solving skills
  • Strong organizational skills with ability to keep careful records of all outreach work
  • Ability to effectively work with and organize volunteers
  • Valid driver's license, satisfactory driving record, and proof of auto insurance required
