We are seeking a Policy Officer to work in Wales to lead on specific Welsh policy areas and to input into wider UK policy. This post will be an exciting combination of policy, advocacy and campaiging.

This is the ideal opportunity for someone with a marine or other environmental policy and legislation background, by providing advice for the development of a coherent marine policy, which will complement and underpin marine advocacy work for Wales Environment Link (WEL).  You will be experienced in responding to policy consultations and able to undertake environmental policy or political liaison work.  You will represent MCS and WEL with assurance when attending policy events and in developing WEL and MCS policy documents.

A confident communicator, you will have a track record in responding to consultations, producing persuasive documents for a range of audiences and be able to achieve WELs’ conservation objectives through policy advocacy.

The remit will include Wales National Marine Pan, Marine Strategy Framework Directive, marine licensing as well as Environment Bill, Wellbeing and Future Generation Bill and Planning Bill.

This post is one of three roles which make-up the Wales Environment Link (WEL) marine campaign team and is hosted by MCS. The post holder will work in partnership with a Policy Officer based in RSPB Cymru and a Marine Campaign and Advocacy Officer based with Wildlife Trusts Wales.

KEY SKILLS

  • Understanding of issues surrounding the Marine Act, Marine Spatial Planning and any other forthcoming relevant bills
  • Able to respond to government consultations in marine or another environmental discipline
  • Have an understanding of how government policy is developed and implemented
  • Excellent communication skills – both written and verbal in order to present compelling information to a range of audiences
