Description

Defenders of Wildlife is a leading environmental non-profit organization, dedicated to the protection of endangered species and habitat. The Defenders website has monthly traffic of more than one million unique visits and approximately 900,000 e-subscribers. The Web Developer plays a key role in the upkeep and management of www.defenders.org and all other Defenders of Wildlife and Defenders of Wildlife Action Fund web properties. This hands-on position requires thorough knowledge of current Defenders web-related systems, as well as the technical aptitude to implement effective solutions.

Responsibilities include writing, testing, and deploying code; creating page layouts; posting content; maintaining effective information architecture; graphic design; integration of new technologies; supporting staff use of the Content Management System (CMS); and assisting with development of website strategy.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Web Production
    • Create, configure and update web pages on Crown Peak CMS, Drupal, Convio and Dreamweaver – require appropriate knowledge of CSS, HTML, PHP, JS, and other web programming languages as needed
    • Configure membership donation forms in Convio, and support creation of new membership donation forms outside of the Online Campaigns team
    • Configure landing pages (eCommerce, Advocacy, Donation, Survey, Google analytics and SEO) and quality assure/test them before they are launched
    • Conduct testing and quality control of web pages, forms, functionality and email communications
    • Light graphic design as needed
  • Web Development
    • Design and code technical solutions to the Defenders and Defenders Action Fund websites
    • Troubleshoot technical issues and implement functionality enhancements to WordPress-based blogs and social media sites, including the Defenders Facebook and Twitter pages
    • Identify system deficiencies – research, recommend, and implement solutions
    • Communicate and enforce coding standards
    • Create well designed, reusable objects
    • Manage and implement APIs relating to current (Convio) and future systems
  • Industry Knowledge
    • Keep abreast of web industry trends, new technologies and competition
    • Attend webinars, lectures and other web-related events
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor’s (B.A./B.S.) degree or equivalent in web design and development, computer science, or information systems  
  • Experience:
    • 3+ years of experience in website development
    • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be accepted as a satisfactory substitute for the specific education and experience listed above.
  • Other:

    Required Qualifications:

    • Strong interpersonal skills
    • Exceptional organizational skills as well as focused attention to detail
    • Ability to accomplish multiple tasks on a number of concurrent projects
    • Technical knowledge in web authoring tools such as Dreamweaver, HTML, CSS, JavaScript, PHP, XML, APIs, etc.
    • Experience using Adobe Photoshop for image manipulation
    • Knowledge of browser-specific compatibility issues
    • Knowledge of technical and functional design requirements
    • Self-motivated and able to work with limited supervision

    Desired Qualifications:

    • Familiarity with web technologies, CMS and software such as Convio, Crown Peak, Google Analytics, Facebook applications, etc.
    • Knowledge of and commitment to web standards and best practices
    • Familiarity working with mobile technologies
  • Physical Demands:
    • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use a computer and communicate with others while doing so.
  • Work Environment:
    • General office working conditions, the noise level in the work environment is usually quiet.
