 ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
 

Manage and supervise a wide array of forest management issues and activities on TNC owned and privately owned lands within the Current River Watershed. Coordinate and manage working forest conservation easements on private lands in the Current River watershed and surrounding areas of the Missouri Ozarks.  Principal duties include conducting phase one environmental assessments, completing baseline documentation of forest property conditions, carrying out recurring compliance monitoring, reviewing forest management plans, advising landowners of management options and needs, and assisting with marketing and protection of forest lands.  Regular work tasks will include collecting field data to document forest conditions, creating maps with ArcGIS and well-written summary documents, using digital cameras and GPS equipment, and contacting private landowners to build and maintain positive relationships and forest land protections.  Additional work may include assisting with conservation planning, land management, media and marketing and other duties as assigned to advance biodiversity conservation goals in the Ozarks.

 

 BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
 

•  Bachelor’s degree in forestry (preferred), natural resources management, ecology, biology or related field and one year related work experience.

•  Knowledge of natural systems, forest management and harvest issues, and demonstrated commitment to conservation

•  Experience coordinating multiple projects and timeframes.

•  Experience managing data and producing written reports.

•  Experience utilizing GIS software and data to create maps.

 

 ADDITIONAL JOB INFORMATION
 

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS:


•  Bachelor’s degree in forestry (preferred), natural resources management, ecology, biology or related field and one year related work experience.

•  Experience with forest ecology and forest management practices that incorporate biological diversity goals.  Experience with forest certifications, sustainable forestry practices, forest economics, reforestation and silvicultural practices preferred.

•  Superb interpersonal skills, including the ability to obtain directed outcomes when engaging with a wide variety of people in diverse situations.

•  Strong written and oral communication skills.

•  PC familiarity, including database knowledge, ArcGIS skills, mapping skills, proficiency with Microsoft Excel and Word.

•  Demonstrated proficiency at analyzing, manipulating and interpreting data.

•  Completing tasks independently to meet specific timelines.

•  Strong familiarity with GIS, including ability to utilize data to create maps.

•  Fluency with navigating and working in remote wooded landscapes, including the ability to navigate with GPS, aerial photographs, and map and compass.


COMPLEXITY/PROBLEM SOLVING:


•  Resolves routine issues independently, consulting with supervisor to develop plans for resolution of unusual or complex problems.

•  Coordinates multiple projects with several variables, setting realistic deadlines and managing timeframes

•  Compiles data, resolves disparities and modifies processes to generate plans

•  Analyze plans, assess ecological impacts, and devise modifications as needed to meet conservation goals.

•  Applies diversified knowledge of scientific principles and practices to a variety of assignments

•  Cultivates and develops creative ideas to improve conservation strategies

DISCRETION/LATITUDE/DECISION-MAKING:


•  Make day-to-day decisions affecting individual work and work of project teams.

•  Consults with supervisor in event of any unusual circumstance, problem or question that falls outside of general property management realm.

•  Exercise independent judgment.

RESPONSIBILITY/OVERSIGHT –FINANCIAL & SUPERVISORY:
•  Hire and supervise contractors conducting land management activities.  Track expenses and revenues associated with forest practices.

•  Negotiate leases and use agreements.

•  May lead or monitor work groups consisting of staff, interns, and volunteers

•  Purchase equipment and supplies as provided for in budget, in consultation with supervisor, monitoring annual budget as needed to ensure appropriate spending limits.

COMMUNICATIONS/INTERPERSONAL CONTACTS:


•  Plan and communicate work instructions to other team members, including volunteers and contractors.

•  Ability to professionally and effectively interact and communicate with private landowners, conservation easement grantors, conservation partners, and the forest products industry.

•  Ability to function productively as a member or leader of a work team.

•  Ability to produce timely, concise, cogent plans and reports.

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL EFFORT:


•  May work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain and under physically demanding circumstances. These conditions: require considerable physical exertion and/or muscular strain; present frequent possibility of injury; require long hours in isolated settings.

•  Work may require occasional long work week hours, including weekend and evening hours and occasional overnight travel outside the base project area.

 SALARY INFORMATION
 28.4k - 45.5k  dependent upon experience
