Description

Help us improve the quality of the water in our rivers, lakes and seas.

The work of the Environment Agency is vitally important to everyone in England. From air and water quality to conservation and ecology, we’re responsible for protecting wildlife and creating better places in which to live. With a focus on mitigating climate change and improving the environment wherever possible, we’re an ambitious organisation that is not afraid to take the boldest approaches, and it’s against this progressive background that you could develop a profoundly interesting career.

In Operations Catchment services we work to improve the water quality of our rivers, lakes and seas, and provide a professional water quality modelling service to customers such as our environmental planning, water company account and permitting teams. Our work helps to identify where improvements in water quality may best be invested to maximum effect, and our planning work combines data from the freshwater and marine environments with discharge data to support decisions that focus on water quality investment, or to assess new water quality related discharge proposals.

Join us as a Water Quality Planning Officer and you’ll support our specialists by delivering a wide range of tasks. We’re a dispersed team of technical experts who specialise in all aspects of water quality modelling, planning and performance, and work to share and develop our skills and establish great relationships with our customers to ensure they receive the service and advice they need. We make the best use of technology to communicate and work virtually, meeting face-to-face when the need arises, an approach that allows us to be flexible on our workplace locations. Training and mentoring support will be provided.

To be a success in this role you’ll be qualified to at least degree standard in a relevant discipline (or have equivalent experience) and may be working towards membership of a professional body. Knowledge and experience with modelling water quality in rivers, lakes or marine environments would be an advantage, and you should be confident in data analysis using software such as Excel, Access, R, and GIS.

You’ll be able to interpret monitoring data, model outputs and results, communicate the important outputs from your technical work and build relationships with people working in different locations. Capable of working effectively with external organisations and using influencing skills to help deliver outcomes, we’ll expect you to review complex reports, identify key issues and summarise them. You should also be ready to shape and embrace new ways of working to improve efficiency and productivity.
