Description

Trout Unlimited (TU) is America's oldest and largest coldwater fisheries conservation organization. TU's mission is to conserve, protect, and restore North America's native trout and salmon and their watersheds. Founded in 1959, TU has more than 150,000 members nationwide organized into 450 local chapters. In Oregon, TU has a full-time staff of 12 working across the state in coordination with our over 3,000 members.

TU has an excellent track-record of conservation results. TU operates under a simple, yet effective conservation formula – protect, reconnect, restore, and sustain. Where rivers and fish populations are intact, we protect them. Where they are fragmented by dams or dewatering, we reconnect them. Where they are degraded, we restore them. And to sustain these efforts into the future, we invest in youth education and outreach, creating a new generation of stream champions to continue our work.

Position Summary

Trout Unlimited (TU) is pleased to announce an opening for a Water Project Coordinator to support ongoing efforts to conserve and recover Oregon's native salmon, trout, and riverine ecosystem.

The Water Project Coordinator will work as part of TU's Oregon Water Project. The candidate will be responsible for all aspects of restoration project management including outreach to landowners, project development, fundraising, furthering TU's mission in southern Oregon, developing strategic approaches to meet that mission, participating in regional partnership efforts, providing fiscal oversight for project budgets, and directing support staff and contractors.

TU's staff work in a highly collaborative environment, with a diversity of partners including landowners, the Klamath Tribes, the Cow Creek Band of the Umpqua Tribe of Indians, state and federal resource management agencies, private and public funders, and other NGO's. The current Klamath Falls office includes a Restoration Program Director, and two Restoration Project Coordinators. Other staff in southern Oregon includes the Oregon Director, and the Southwest Oregon Sportsman Conservation Program manager.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop, design, coordinate, and implement instream flow restoration projects resulting in the rehabilitation and enhancement of habitat for aquatic and terrestrial wildlife species and overall ecological function.
  • Evaluate potential stream flow restoration projects with private landowners and other stakeholders, both independently and in group settings.
  • Foster relationships with landowners and partners to develop stream flow restoration projects and priorities.
  • Identify funding sources, prepare budgets and proposals, and obtain funding for restoration projects.
  • Complete state water right transfer processes as necessary.
  • Complete state and federal permitting requirements for restoration projects and conservation easements as necessary.
  • Manage project implementation including budgeting, scheduling, coordination of partners, contractor selection and oversight, and reporting.
  • Prepare grant deliverables including quarterly, annual, and final progress reports.
  • Monitor projects including tracking instream flow, compliance with instream water rights, and ecologic outcomes.
  • Foster and maintain positive relationships with landowners and other stakeholders with varying political and social backgrounds.
  • Collaborate closely with partners, including federal, state and local government agencies, academic institutions, and non-profit organizations.
  • Additional duties may be assigned as necessary.

The position is based at TU's Klamath Basin office in Klamath Falls, Oregon; other locations in southern Oregon may be considered. The position will require regular travel throughout the Upper Klamath Lake watershed and Rogue River basin, and periodic travel to other locations in Oregon and California to participate in collaborative meetings with our partners and to support other projects. The successful candidate will report to the Oregon Director.
