Job title:                                   Water and Natural Resource Co-ordinator

 

Responsible to:                        Senior Water and Natural Resources Coordinator and staff body

 

Responsible for:                       Biology Dept. ACM, volunteer helpers and student placements 

 

Working with                           Water and Natural Resource Co-ordinator (FCM)

                                                Water and Natural Resource Technician  (ACM)         

 

Salary:                                     £17,485 per annum                 

 

Position:                                   Full Co-op Member (40 hours/week)

                       

Job summary

The Centre for Alternative Technology (CAT) demonstrates ecologically sustainable methods and technology to the public from its 40-acre site in the hills of west Wales.  It aims to inspire, inform and enable society to move towards a more sustainable future.  We manage ourselves on co-operative principles. The CAT site comprises practical demonstrations of experimental sustainable living. The Biology department is responsible for several displays and systems including slow sand filters for water purification, compost toilets, constructed wetlands, rainwater-harvesting systems, and composting. 

 

The main CAT site includes a small holding and comprises of 5 acres of mixed woodland., reservoir and disused quarry habitat, Approximately ¼ mile away is CAT’s 15 acre woodland, Coed Gwern; a resource managed for wildlife, products, education and the community. This site is semi natural mixed woodland, with a workshop for woodland crafts.

 

Biology department is responsible for integrated management of CAT’s natural areas resources for wildlife, education and production purposes

 

The post holder will be responsible for the implementing the departments strategic objectives, with a particular emphasis on ‘ecological water, sanitation and organic waste management’.  They will help CAT keep at the forefront of sustainable technologies, inputting technical advice and ensuring best practice for CAT’s existing and future projects. 

 

On successful completion of a six month probationary period the appointee will be confirmed in post as a permanent member of staff and will be expected to take part in the co-operative management structure of CAT.

 

Responsibilities

 

(Percentages are for guidance only)

 

Water, Sanitation and Organic Waste Resource Management            (35% )

  • Effective management of CAT’s water supply, wastewater treatment, ecological sanitation and organic waste management systems.
  • Manage the maintenance and development of the above e.g sand filters, UV filters, rainwater systems, reed beds and sewerage, compost toilets and greywater beds, pipework.

 

 

Natural Resource Management           (15% )

  • Assist with the practical management, maintenance and development of CAT’s natural areas and systems, (to include woodland management, invasive species control etc.)

 

Departmental Obligations        (15%)

  • Assist with recruitment, induction and management of the Biology team to achieve dept. strategic objectives and maintenance programme.
  • Supervise and arrange supervision of volunteers
  • Assist with supervision of student placement, work experience, etc, as necessary.
  • Undertake fundraising activities in collaboration with Fundraising Dept.
  • Ensure health and safety compliance of the department in conjunction with Water and Natural Resource Supervisor: attend Health and Safety Committee as requested.
  • Review and update systems, polices, and management plans as required to ensure continued best practice.
  • Assist with departmental work plans and attend regular work-meetings to ensure efficient management.
  • Provide expertise to other departments as required.

 

Consultancy                             (10%)   

  • Give specialist advice and prepare reports on ecological sanitation systems, water resource management and organic waste management. (Also other aspects of departmental expertise where appropriate).  Carry out site visits where necessary.
  • Provide practical skills and assistance on-site where necessary

 

Education and outreach          (25%  )

  • Lecture at all levels on sanitation, water management, and organic waste management (e.g composting), including tailor made, CPD, MSc and public courses. (Also other aspects of departmental expertise where appropriate)
  • Design courses and write material for the above, and assist CAT with education collaboration projects. 
  • Liaise with Media Dept. on Biology related publicity opportunities and act as a spokesperson for CAT.
  • Devise relevant Biology Dept. research
  • Answer queries from individuals for CAT's free information service.
  • Take specialist guided tours for groups and individuals as required.
  • Devise and maintain Biology Dept. displays on site, in liaison with Senior Natural Resources Coordinator and Displays Dept.
  • Write specialist material for CAT and external publications as required.

 

Person specification

Qualified to at least degree level in a scientific/environmental  discipline

A minimum of two years experience in water and natural resource management.

Experience with appropriate water, sanitation and organic waste management

Excellent  oral and written communication skills

A minimum of a years experience in teaching and lecturing

Commitment to CAT’s vision and co-operative ethos

IT literate (e.g. Microsoft office, database work, internet)

Ability to effectible manage own budgets and workloads

Flexible, conscientious, personable individual

Excellent time management skills

Excellent interpersonal skills

Experience with health and safety issues

Immunisation for Tetanus, Hepatitis A, Typhoid

 

 

Desirable

Experience in delivering consultancy services

Experience of inputting to funding bids

Experience of public speaking and or giving media interviews

Driving license

Fist aid at work qualification

Welsh speaking or willingness to learn
