Duration of contract: One year (may be extended) Greenpeace is seeking a Peace and Disarmament specialist to monitor and report to the Organisation on the State of play on international peace and disarmament issues. PurposeTo provide Greenpeace with the capacity to monitor peace and disarmament issues internationally and to provide quarterly strategic assessments for the organisation on the state of play on peace and disarmament, global flashpoints, emerging issues of concern and key related upcoming issues. Key Responsibilities- Produce quarterly strategic assessments on the state of play on peace and disarmament issues, global flashpoints, emerging issues of concern and key upcoming issues, and that Greenpeace needs to be aware of in relation to its other campaign issues.
- Monitor and report on political, technical and military conditions relating to potential/actual military conflicts involving one or more Nuclear Weapons State including confirmed unofficial and unconfirmed weapon states.
- Monitor and report on conflicts that may become of global significance or that may affect Greenpeace offices, staff or operations
- Monitor and report on political and diplomatic developments relating to nuclear weapons proliferation and nuclear disarmament, including international talks and treaties.
- Identify opportunities where peace and disarmament messaging could be included in Greenpeace’s ongoing campaigns, particularly on climate change where the threat of resource shortages, mass migration, etc could undermine regional and even global security.
- Maintain an internal database including materials and information relevant to the watching brief accessible to the organisation.
- Undertake any other duties, appropriate to the post, as delegated by the peace and disarmament watching brief management team.
Required Skills & Qualifications- Personal belief in and support for Greenpeace’s aims and values
- Proven expertise and knowledge of peace and disarmament issues, conflict related to access to resources and nuclear non-proliferation (preferably 3-5 years)
- Proven expertise in research, report writing, and analysis.
- Existing experience with relevant networks working on peace and disarmament issues
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively with the media
- Able to contribute to the development of strategies, assess and select the targets most relevant to achieving Organisational objectives.
- Willing to explore new ideas and options.
- Good communicator and team player capable of developing and presenting detailed and realistic plans. Able to work under stress and meet deadlines.
- Able to work in foreign countries and adapt to local cultures.
- High degree of creativity and flexibility to combine local, regional and global political demands from different levels of the organization.
- Able to prepare, present and comply with an operational budget.
- Fluent in written and spoken in English. Fluency in Turkish or Arabic or Hebrew as well as any other UN languages would be a great advantage
- Proficient in word processing, spreadsheets, presentations and email.
- Willing to travel frequently and with no restrictions on international travel.
