Description

Help us put the environment first

About us

At the Environment Agency, we put the environment at the heart of everything we do. Acting to reduce the impacts of a changing climate on people and wildlife has never been more important, and our work helps ensure that people can enjoy nature for generations to come. But we can’t do it alone. Our people do incredible work, day in, day out. That’s why we’re committed to providing them with everything they need to do the best work they can, plus a substantial leave allowance, generous pension scheme and flexible working patterns.

About the role

As a Senior Permitting Officer, you’ll help protect the environment and support sustainable economic growth through assessing applications for a range of complex environmental permits. You’ll work with colleagues and stakeholders across all levels of the organisation and beyond, providing mentoring and coaching support and helping team members resolve complex permitting issues where needed. Our permitting team carries out crucial work that touches every aspect of UK life, and impacts everything from the economy to people and wildlife. As a part of this team, you’ll make your own contribution to safeguarding our natural environment. You’ll also be supported through training and development initiatives to build on your existing skills, and develop new ones.

About you

You’ll have a degree (or equivalent) in a science or humanities subject, and experience in environmental management and environmental risk assessment. You’ll have specialist technical knowledge of a broad range of waste sites and activities, and some regulatory or operational experience of regulated industry. You’ll be a team player, with excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to develop and maintain good relationships with internal and external partners. You’ll also have great organisational, decision making, and influencing skills, with the ability to make risk-based decisions. On a personal level, you’ll be passionate about the environment, and have the drive and willingness to coach others and achieve results.
