Background:

South Holland is a unique environment in the Fenland area of South Lincolnshire covering an area of 74,238 hectares. It is sparsely populated (84,600 living in 38,450) and has a rural and farming infrastructure. South Holland District Council (SHDC) provides a weekly refuse sack and weekly recycling sack scheme (paper, card, glass, mixed plastics, cans) to all households in the South Holland area. In a recent national survey residents of SHDC placed the kerbside refuse and recycling collection (for satisfaction) in 2nd place. This was out of a total of 352 Councils. SHDC strongly believes in Waste Minimisation practices and therefore does not provide a separate garden waste collection just to achieve recycling targets. To build upon the success of the current kerbside recycling scheme SHDC will be focusing on increasing its monitoring of the service and increasing engagement with its community which will help residents recycle more materials while at the same time reduce any contamination of the recycling.

Objective:

The main objective of this project is to increase the kerbside recycling performance and to increase resident’s knowledge of the scheme and therefore their subsequent actions in respect to the scheme. The success of this project will be determined by: •Increase in recycling performance •Decrease in recycling contamination rate •Decrease in the number of incorrectly presented materials for collection.
