Vulture Conservation Officer - Egyptian Vulture Flyway Project

BirdLife International is seeking to recruit an enthusiastic and experienced individual for the position of Vulture Conservation Officer. The main responsibility will be to provide management support to vulture conservation projects, especially the European Union- Life funded project on “Urgent action to strengthen the Balkan population of the Egyptian Vulture and secure its flyway” and facilitate the project communication activities. He/she will provide general support to the coordination and management of the BirdLife vulture programme in Africa, specifically supporting the BirdLife Africa Partnership in implementation of existing strategies.

 

1. Support the timely implementation of funded projects in the portfolio in accordance with the project documents, supporting agreements (e.g. contracts, agreements etc.), annual work plans and the organisations procedures;

2. Ensure that project budgets are utilized and monitored in accordance with internal controls and donor agreements; 

3. Lead on the collection, collation and reporting of all project data and documents and assist with the submission of technical and financial progress reports according to the agreed formats and deadlines;

4. Assist in providing technical support and facilitation to project activities and ensure quality outputs that meet the satisfaction of lead project beneficiaries and project partners;

5. Provide project partners with necessary capacity support for project delivery;

6. Coordinate effective liaison between the BirdLife Africa Partnership and other stakeholders involved in vulture projects.

 

1. Regularly provide key highlights to the Communications Team to develop and publish vulture news items for webpage, newsletters and other media;

2. Gather information from partners on key activity highlights and develop content to include in monthly updates through the Africa Vulture Bulletin to the BirdLife Partnership. 

 

1. Contribute to vulture programme planning;

2. Ensure allocated projects contribute to and report against the 10 Year BirdLife Strategy and the CMS African-Eurasian Multi-species Action Plan;

3. Contribute to annual work planning and budgeting for the vulture programme;

4. Develop and maintain working relationships with other BirdLife programmes and staff to strengthen programme implementation;

5. Support the identification of fundraising opportunities agreed with the Vulture Conservation Manager;

6. Work closely with BirdLife partners in the development of innovative fundraising proposals that address BirdLife partner’s needs on vulture conservation;

 

Carry out any other duties from time to time as required by the line-manager.

 

• Master’s degree in conservation, natural resource management or related field with five years work experience or a Bachelor’s degree with 7 years of relevant work experience

• Good knowledge of biodiversity conservation essential; ornithological knowledge and interest in raptors will be an advantage

• A proven track record of five years relevant work experience in biodiversity conservation, results-based project cycle management including monitoring and evaluation methodologies and project budget management, communications and networking, interacting confidently with multiple stakeholders including with government officials and local communities, strong background in communication

• Deep understanding of conservation issues in Africa; good knowledge and interest in ornithology, ecology and applied biology; especially about old world vultures; good knowledge in effective communication in conservation and development issues

• Good analytical skills, high motivation, desire to achieve

• Ability to develop and implement species conservation projects; a good team worker who can also display leadership qualities

• Excellent written and oral communication skills

• Ability to work with people with various levels of competence

• Ability to analyse complex problems and generate creative and pragmatic solutions

• Flexibility and ability to work independently

• Ability to determine and set work priorities, organise activities and meet deadlines

• Proven ability that the person is a self-starter capable of working under limited supervision

• Good computer skills in all standard Microsoft Office packages

• Willingness to travel to project sites and regional travel where necessary.

Salary & benefits:

Commensurate with experience and qualifications and in accordance with BirdLife International, Africa Division terms and conditions. 

• Gross monthly salary: KShs 75,000

• Length/duration of this position: 12 months

• Working hours – Full time 40 hours per week

• Date when the job expected to start: 9 April 2018 with possibility of negotiation.
