Nature Reserves Visitor Assistant

We are looking for new full-time volunteers to join our international team protecting birds and their habitats and inspiring and educating people about birds and nature in the Maltese Islands. Volunteers will be based in our offices and at our nature reserves in Malta. Those who have previously participated in a long-term Erasmus+ European Voluntary Service (EVS) scheme or long-term Erasmus+ Volunteering scheme are not eligible to apply for these positions.

Are you:

☑️ Aged 18-30
☑️ A citizen of one of the programme or partner countries
☑️ Outgoing, friendly, keen to meet new people, socialise, and experience a different culture
☑️ Interested in improving bird, flora and other taxa identification skills
☑️ Interested in inspiring and educating people about birds and the natural world
☑️ Willing to develop administration, time management, numeracy, and interpersonal skills
☑️ Willing to learn and having an adaptable approach in line with the needs of a charitable organisation’s structure including working flexible and occasional long hours, which could include weekends and public holidays.

The European Solidarity Corps programme will provide you:

☑️ Accommodation close to our offices in Ta’ Xbiex/in the northern part of the island close to our nature reserves, or with host families
☑️ Utilities such as electricity, water, gas, and internet
☑️ Reimbursement of the flight and other transport costs (bus, train, metro) to/from Malta, limited according to distance
☑️ €380 monthly allowance
☑️ Private HEALTH insurance provided by Henner

Description of duties:

NATURE RESERVES VISITOR ASSISTANT

In this role you will assist in the opening of the reserves to the public, working and ensuring visitors enjoy a pleasant experience. The chosen applicants will work at our nature reserves (Għadira, Simar, Foresta 2000 and Salina) reporting to the Site Warden and Head of Land Management. Training on the history of the sites and the flora and fauna of the reserves will be provided. Duties will include:

☑️ Assisting in opening BirdLife Malta’s nature reserves to the public in the afternoon/evening, including on weekends
☑️ Setting up the display within the reception centre at the reserves
☑️ Preparing the nature shop at the reserves
☑️ Setting up binoculars before the reserve opening hours
☑️ Greeting visitors at the reserves and giving a basic explanation about the nature reserve, its history, flora and fauna
☑️ Managing a small shop and promoting sales whilst encouraging membership to BirdLife Malta
☑️ Compiling visitor statistics and gathering feedback from visitors
☑️ Participating in regular events held at the nature reserves with the aim of educating visitors towards more environmental appreciation
☑️ Taking visitors around the reserves, which could entail walking on uneven terrain even during summer
☑️ Assisting in research work being carried out at the nature reserves
☑️ Helping with inputting of data.

Should the reserves be closed to the public for certain periods, especially the summer months, the applicants are expected to report at the nature reserves in order to assist the managing warden in the implementation of the work plan for the site. Such work has a physical aspect relating to the upgrade and maintenance of the habitat, as well as an element of research with ongoing studies on the flora and fauna of the sites.

EDUCATION ASSISTANT

The education team is looking for engaging and enthusiastic people to inspire, involve and educate children, young people and adults about birds and the natural environment.

We are looking for motivated individuals with the following profile:

☑️ Good command of English
☑️ A passion for the natural environment
☑️ Good communication and engaging skills
☑️ Ability to enthuse, lead and inspire others to appreciate the natural environment
☑️ A background in environmental education, biology, communication, equivalent studies or equivalent experience will be considered an asset
☑️ Experience with delivering nature sessions for different age groups will also be considered an advantage
☑️ Flexibility to work during weekends

The chosen candidate will fulfil a combination of the following tasks:

School education:

☑️ Delivering educational talks and activities in Primary and Secondary schools
☑️ Delivering nature sessions for Early Years and Year 6 classes at Salina Nature Reserve
☑️ Encouraging and training teachers to carry out nature-based learning
☑️ Supporting with the delivery of teacher training workshops
☑️ Supporting with the creation of wildlife gardens in schools
☑️ Monitoring and evaluating the schools’ engagement with our Dinja Waħda environmental education programme
☑️ Booking school field visits at our nature reserves
☑️ Compiling newsletters for schools

Outreach and engagement:

☑️ Creating activities, resources and events for engaging children of different ages with nature
☑️ Leading outreach and community events
☑️ Participating at stands and fairs
☑️ Developing Klabb Ħuttaf (children) membership events
☑️ Assisting BirdLife Malta’s Nature Guardians seasonal courses
☑️ Delivering summer course sessions
☑️ Coordinating sessions with youths, scouts and guides, Systems of Knowledge students
☑️ Engaging with the public at BirdLife Malta’s nature reserves
☑️ Supporting our Erasmus+ international projects’ deliverables and events
☑️ Creating content for Tik Tok and Dinja Waħda Facebook page

Administration and office communication:

☑️ Attending regular meetings with the education team
☑️ Compiling an end-of-year handover report
☑️ Keeping up-to-date engagement data
☑️ Supporting the education team with any additional administration tasks
☑️ Writing of blogs, articles, social media posts and monthly newsletters

EVENTS & OUTREACH ASSISTANT

BirdLife Malta is looking for an engaging and enthusiastic person to inspire, involve and educate children, young people and adults about birds and the natural world. As an Events & Outreach Assistant you will be involved in planning, delivering and running and promoting events, delivering schools visits, assisting the Education and Communication team.

We are looking for motivated individuals with the following profile:

☑️ Good command of English

☑️ Good communication and engaging skills
☑️ Ability to enthuse, lead and inspire others to appreciate the natural environment
☑️ A background in environmental education, biology, communication, equivalent studies or equivalent experience will be considered an asset

☑️ Flexibility to work during weekends 

The chosen candidate will fulfil a combination of the following tasks:

Events

☑️ Organise and  coordinate  a  calendar  of  events,  handling  booking procedures, manage events emails, and keep an accurate record of all events
☑️ Assist the education and communication teams, and other relevant BirdLife Malta committees and sub-committees with the organisation of events
☑️ Prepare communications materials to promote these events
☑️ Promote events on BirdLife Malta’s website and social media, newsletter and magazine
☑️ Promote memberships and engagement with BirdLife Malta at stalls, fairs, events and in other public places
☑️ Compile statistics for events which include numbers of participants, costs and donations
☑️ Support the Events and Volunteers Coordinator with recruiting and training volunteers to assist with events and conservation work
☑️ Write blogs, articles, social media posts and newsletters about events and outreach work delivered

Education and outreach

☑️ Deliver school educational sessions at the nature reserves for Early Years
☑️ Deliver school talks
☑️ Participate in stands to promote BirdLife Malta’s work
☑️ Engage with the community
☑️ Collaborate with Education Assistants to deliver a programme of events and activities targeting families, young people and the local community
☑️ Coordinate BirdLife Malta’s FALKO youth group and create opportunities for youths

Administration and office communication

☑️ Attend regular meetings with the Communication Manager, education team to review progress and plan ahead
☑️ Compile an end-of-year report for volunteering assistants
☑️ Support the Events and Volunteers Officer with any additional administration tasks when requested
☑️ Book school field visits at our nature reserves
