Description
As the small animal case load at the China Bear Rescue Centre increases we need help to ensure the dogs and cats at the centre and the local animals around the centre are not forgotten. To this end, we have created a new volunteer position for people with animalwelfare interests to assist with the care of our smaller four legged friends.

As a small animal volunteer your duties will include walking and feeding the local dogs, helping with the centre dogs and cats and developing new fun enrichment ideas for the dogs and cats. We also have a growing small animal hospital offering veterinary services and will soon become a regular clinic for local animals. We need volunteers who are able to assist in the care of hospitalised animals and abandoned dogs & cats waiting for new homes. A lot of these animals are fearful of people and need a lot of TLC to build up their confidence. When the small animal workload is quiet you will also be needed to help the other volunteers with vital behavioral observations on our beautiful bears.

Small animal volunteers will need previous experience in the handling of dogs and cats especially as a lot of the animals we see are nervous and scared of people. Volunteers must be patient and gentle with these animals as building trust is vital. Volunteers should also be willing to manage animals which may be suffering from severe neglect and should prepare themselves for a standard of ‘pet care’ which is currently very much
different to that seen in Western countries.

This position would suit a kennels worker or student veterinary nurse or someone with animal behavior/welfare experience. Volunteers are expected to work six days per week unless alternative arrangements have been made. Working hours are variable, but are normally 8.00am until 6pm during quiet times. On-site accommodation and meals are provided.

Rabies is endemic to China and so prophylactic rabies vaccination is strongly recommended for this position.

We prefer volunteers to commit to at least three months.
