Post Title: Volunteer Scientific Diver

Context: Nature Seychelles, a leading environmental NGO in the Western Indian Ocean, has an opportunity for 2 volunteer scientific divers to assist with the implementation of a coral reef restoration project in the Seychelles (for more information about the project, please refer to http://natureseychelles.org/what-we-do/coral-reef-restoration 

Over a period of 2 months, volunteer Scientific Divers will assist the Reef Restoration Specialist with the daily running of a reef restoration project, at an island resort on Felicite, Seychelles. Alongside learning about innovative techniques in reef restoration, primary tasks will include; transplantation of nursery-grown colonies, nursery maintenance and ecological monitoring.  

Working hours will be 08:30-16:30 during weekdays, typically conducting up to two dives a day (weather permitting). The post holders may also be required to assist with data analysis, scientific report writing and the preparation and maintenance of dive equipment. 

Skills and requirements:          

Essential

  • An experienced, certified diver (ideally PADI Rescue Diver or equivalent) capable of diving in challenging conditions.
  • Demonstrable experience of carrying out physical work underwater.
  • High physical fitness and ability to work in harsh conditions.
  • Practically oriented with initiative to solve problems underwater, effectively.
  • Flexible to a variable work schedule and capable of living on an isolated island.
  • Effective communicator and English speaking.
  • Suitable diving and travel insurance.

Desirable 

  • BSc / MSc in marine science or a related subject.
  • Previous experience working in tropical marine conservation and/or research (ideally coral reef restoration).
  • Previous experience writing scientific reports and analysing data.
  • Own personal dive gear. 
  • Boat license (RYA powerboat level 2 or equivalent). 

Conditions

  • 2 months temporary placement (October – November, 2018).

Base location: Split between Felicite and Praslin, Republic of Seychelles.

Felicite: Six Senses, Zil Pasyon resort – 2 people sharing a room, all meals provided, with the possibility of spending weekends off the island. 

Praslin: Nature Seychelles, Island Conservation Centre - Shared dormitory, including kitchen and bathroom. No meals provided.
