Description
Introduction: The Zanzibar Butterfly Center (ZBC) is a new tourist attraction for Zanzibar through a live display of Tanzanian butterflies. It works closely in association with Jozani Chwaka Bay National Park, Jozani Environmental Conservation Association (JECA) and Pete Development Association (PDA). Through revenue generated by tourist admissions it provides funds for local projects in the form of alternative livelihoods, conservation and poverty alleviation. Project Description: The Zanzibar Butterfly Center (ZBC) has developed an interactive butterfly exhibit near to Jozani National Park, though outside the park boundaries. The exhibit consists of a netted enclosure and garden with approximately 400-600 butterflies at any one time all of which are native species to Zanzibar. The enclosure is approximately 30m x 20m making it one of Africa’s largest butterfly exhibits and will provide residents and tourists of Zanzibar with an interactive and visual environment to learn about butterflies. The butterflies (in pupae form) are farmed sustainably by people from the villages who live around Jozani Chwaka Bay National Park. The ZBC works closely with the park and local NGO’s and through income generated from tourist admissions aims to assist local development projects, particularly those that are involved in conservation and that help protect the islands natural resources. Position: This project is for people who want to actively engage in community development and conservation as well as gain valuable work experience. The work will involve a variety of tasks, including: project development, marketing and promotion, liaison with local NGOs and communities, farming of butterflies and other aspects of the day to day running of the project. The project assistant would ideally be available from beginning of November and have skills and experience relevant to the job. Candidates need to be available for a minimum of six months. ZBC will provide work permits and a local monthly salary. However as a volunteer you would need to cover your return airfare, insurance and additional living costs whilst in Zanzibar. Those genuinely interested should send a cover letter and CV to: mail@zanzibarbutterflies.com
