The Department (the Australian Partner Organisation [APO]) is seeking to nominate a candidate for a
volunteer assignment through AusAID’s VIDA (Volunteering for International Development from
Australia) program. Further information about volunteering with VIDA, including support and allowances
provided, can be obtained from: www.vidavolunteers.com.au

The Department leads Australian Government engagement on the Coral Triangle Initiative on Coral
Reefs, Fisheries and Food Security (CTI). The CTI is a multilateral agreement focused on collaborative
action to improve marine conservation and management and through this, sustainable livelihoods, food
security and economic development. The Coral Triangle countries include Indonesia, Malaysia, Papua
New Guinea, Philippines, Solomon Islands, and Timor Leste. For further information, see www.ctisecretariat.net
In delivering support to the CTI, the Department works closely with its counterpart agency in the
Solomon Islands: the Ministry of Environment, Conservation, Disaster Management and Meteorology
(MECDM). MECDM lead the Country’s CTI engagement, including the implementation of their CTI
National Plan of Action (NPOA). The NPOA was formally launched on 18 January 2011.
The capacity of MECDM to deliver core government functions and to plan and coordinate
implementation of the NPOA, is constrained due to limited human and financial resources. As a new
initiative, the establishment of strong intergovernmental procedures will be fundamental in ensuring the
success of the CTI.

The primary objective of this volunteer assignment is to help establish procedures and communications
protocols, provide mentoring support to help streamline CTI activities, reduce associated administrative
burdens, and enhance MECDMs ability to implement the SI NPOA and engage in the CTI effectively.
