This position is unpaid

  • Initial 3 month contract to start in January 2012
  • London based, 2-5 days a week, 9/10am-5/6pm, but can be flexible
  • Closing date for applications: 31 November 2011

Global Witness' land campaign is seeking a full or part time volunteer. The campaign aims to improve transparency, accountability and recognition of local rights in the way in which land-related investment deals are being done in developing countries. This is a new campaign area for Global Witness and we shall be working on country level case studies as well as engaging in international level policy and normative framework development.

This role is a great opportunity for someone looking to build up knowledge of investigations, research and the global debate about how increasing global interested in commercial land investments can be harnessed to maximise benefits and minimise risks for local communities and the environment.

The position will involve:

  • Conducting desk-based research
  • Media monitoring
  • Assisting in the preparation of briefing papers
  • Contributing to the campaign’s overall strategy
  • Other administrative and support jobs as necessary

The position would be primarily focused on two areas of work. Firstly, research into the drivers and impacts of large-scale land acquisitions in mainland southeast asia. Secondly, analysis of legal and policy entry points for improving transparency, accountability and governance in decision making about land and natural resource allocation. The position would be most suitable for recent university graduate students with a background in land and natural resources, law, international development, corporate social responsibility, human rights, or agricultural economics. Applicants should be reliable and well-organized, with good computer and communication skills. Excellent internet-based research skills are essential. Proficiency in written and spoken English is essential, other languages may be an advantage.

Unfortunately this position is unpaid, however, Global Witness does provide a daily transport and food allowance.

To apply, send both a letter of interest (including dates of availability) and a CV to Jenny Bromley at cambodia@globalwitness.org. Please put “Volunteer Application” as the subject of the email.

CVs will not be accepted from recruitment agencies. We regret that we are not able to provide feedback to unsuccessful applicants.
