Description

Position: Volunteer Ph.D. research assistant

Location: Mauritius

Background

The Indian Ocean island of Mauritius is within one of the world’s leading biodiversity hotspots. Prior to human colonisation in the 16th century, Mauritius had one of the most diverse reptile faunas of any oceanic island on the planet. The combination of invasive species and extensive habitat destruction over the past 400 years has decimated the unique reptile community causing extinctions, population decline and fragmentation. Most of the species that still survive can now only be found in degraded and fragmented habitats. One species of particular concern is the Mauritius lowland day gecko, Phelsuma guimbeaui.

We are looking for a volunteer to assist postgraduate research to determine the status, threats and ecology of the endemic lowland day gecko to secure the species future survival.

Requirements

We need the volunteer to:

·         assist the research between February and September 2010

·         hold at least a B.Sc. degree in a biological background and have a keen interest in conservation and herpetology

·         be physically fit and willing to work long hours, whilst taking care to record and file data accurately, six days per week in often hot, humid and arduous conditions

·         preferably hold a clean driving/motorbike licence

The candidate will need to cover their return flight, insurance for the full duration of their stay, vaccinations and personal equipment. There will be a one off charge of approximately £40 for a basic medical to obtain entry permits once in Mauritius and approximately £140 to £200 per month to cover costs for food, social and personal items. Basic accommodation will be provided.
