The Barn Owl Trust is seeking to recruit a reliable and committed volunteer to assist our Conservation Officers when out on nest-boxing trips. As most of our nestboxing work is carried out during the winter months, this is initially a seasonal post. There may also be the opportunity to be involved in other aspects of Barn Owl conservation work.

Essential requirements:

  • Be able to commit to two days a week, Tuesday and Thursday, for a minimum of 3 months. Work hours are generally between 9am - 5pm but at times may be 8am - 6pm. Prior warning would be given for extended hours though.
  • Must have basic woodwork skills and be confident using a handsaw, a drill, etc.
  • Must be physically fit and capable of carrying more than 15 kilograms of weight over short distances.
  • Competency with Ordnance Survey maps and confidence reading grid references and directing.

Desirable requirements:

  • Understanding of issues facing farmland birds.
  • Experience of ladder work would be advantageous.
  • Current driving licence would be desirable.

  • Barn Owl Ecology, Surveys and Signs course, leading to one of two references needed for Nest Inspection Licence application.
  • Small Mammal Ecology day-course from the Mammal Society.
  • First Aid training.
  • Involvement in owl rehabilitation.
  • Participation in practical habitat management.
  • Possibility to gain further training if funding can be secured.
