Description

The National Marine Aquarium was the first aquarium in the United Kingdom solely set up for the purpose of education, conservation and research.

As the largest aquarium in the UK we have a dedicated and experienced team of biologists who deal with the day to day running and development of the displays. In order to assist the husbandry team we have developed a Volunteer Internship program.

Our Interns work directly with the husbandry team and assist in the day to day running and development of all aspects of the husbandry department. The positions are designed to introduce basic animal care and husbandry skills. In return our Interns receive invaluable experience of working in a large and dynamic aquarium helping us to achieve our aim of becoming one of Europe’s best aquariums.

We currently house one of the largest collections of jellyfish in the UK with a large support laboratory for breeding. Jellyfish require high levels of care and maintenance and this position would involve working predominantly within this area to support the biologist responsible.

We are looking for two volunteers to join our Husbandry Internship Program. As a husbandry intern you will be involved in the running of the aquarium’s displays and back of house facilities. Your main aim will be to provide support and assistance for the biologists and their day to day duties. Internship programs are full time positions (37.5 hours per week) that run for a minimum of 3 months and will also include rota’d weekend work.

The successful candidates will be enthusiastic and be able to show initiative also physically fit and able to spend all day on their feet. A background in marine related conservation and/or fish keeping is not necessary but would be beneficial.

This position is unpaid and unfortunately the National Marine Aquarium cannot assist with expenses. However, we do provide a free lunch from our café. The internship will run from either July – Sept 2013 or Oct - Dec 2013.

To apply: Please send full CV with covering letter setting out your experience and suitability for the role to:
