Position Summary

The Development Intern for Grant Programs will work with an experienced development professional on a variety of projects assigned according to the individual’s level of interest and skill in the grants process.  Possible areas of work include grant proposal research and development, foundation prospect research, and non-profit communications.  Interns will research funding opportunities, develop proposal concepts, assist with the production of communications pieces, and enter and maintain information about current and prospective funders in the Wild Salmon Center's Raiser's Edge database. 

The person in this position is expected to demonstrate excellent attention to detail along with good writing and analytical skills.  A successful intern will develop skills in grant proposal writing, learn to use the Raiser’s Edge database, become acquainted with foundations that support environmental issues, gain competency in tools used for prospect research, learn about foundation cultivation and solicitation, and become familiar with nonprofit communications activities.  This position could provide an intern with skills, experience and connections useful in future employment opportunities.

Responsibilities May Include

  • With the guidance of the Director of Grant Programs, work with Program and Finance staff to produce grant reports.
  • Identify and research prospective funders using the Foundation Center Online database and other search tools.
  • With the guidance of the Director of Grant Programs, develop proposal concepts and conduct research in order to develop compelling proposals.
  • Enter and maintain foundation records in the Raiser’s Edge database, ensuring accuracy and integrity of the information entered.
  • Depending on skills and interest, develop custom database reports using Crystal Reports to develop proposal submission schedules, and facilitate communication with program staff about funding prospects.
  • Maintain development hard copy and electronic filing systems.
  • Perform other duties as agreed.

Position Requirments

  • A Bachelor's degree or current enrollment in a Bachelor?s degree program is required.
  • High level of attention to detail and excellent writing and analytical skills.
  • Interest in honing skills related to non-profit development.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office software, particularly Word, Excel and Outlook and a high degree of comfort learning new software applications.
  • Enthusiasm for the mission of the Wild Salmon Center and an understanding of environmental issues.

Time Commitment

This is a volunteer position envisioned for 10-20 hours per week for 3-6 months.  The terms of the internship will be negotiated based on the successful applicant’s goals and availability.
