Description

Conservation volunteers needed on the island of San Cristobal, Galapagos, from mid January 2012 onwards, for the Galapagos Organic Rescue project.

Galapagos Organic Rescue aims to eradicate invasive introduced plant species which are crowding out native vegetation.  The project works in private land (3% of the islands land is privately owned) to complement the projects in the National Park and prevent recontamination.  The project will plant a mixture of native species and organic crops in the private land, to prevent the return of the invasive species and provide the farmers with a sustainable, environmentally-friendly means to make a living and avoid the need for illegal fishing or other damaging activities.  Organic sugar cane will be used to produce environmentally-friendly fuel.

Volunteers can help with clearing introduced species, reforesting with native species and planting organic, non-invasive crops.  Volunteer tasks may also include environmental outreach work, processing sugar cane in traditional mills or helping to milk cows and make organic cheese.
