Description

This animal clinic provides nursing and veterinary care for Koh Phangan's stray and unwanted animals. It has a dedicated neutering and vaccination programme, which has made an enormous difference to population control on the island, as well as the health of the individual animals.

The tourist influx to Koh PhaNgan has resulted in a greater availability of food, and with many animal-loving tourists intermittently feeding and caring for the animals around them, the population has been boosted to unnatural numbers. The stress of fighting for survival in this overpopulated environment results in many injuries to both dogs (which quickly fester in the humid, tropical climate) and humans (which brings a real threat of rabies).

Until the founding of the animal clinic, there was no veterinary care or advice on the island, no vaccination, and no population control measures except for yearly poisoning by dart or bait. Baiting usually targets the well-fed animals as they can keep the weaker strays away, resulting in a great many yearly tragedies with pets. The mission of this project is to create a healthy, non-breeding stray animal population with the help of volunteers.

Volunteers assist the full time nurses with their roles, including treatment of the animals (training will be provided), catching dogs and cats, feeding, laundry, bathing and anything else that the clinic needs to stay functioning on a day to day basis.

Accommodation will be provided for veterinary nurses who work full time (5 days per week). Other volunteers are responsible for covering their living expenses. Drinking water, rice, tea and coffee are provided for all volunteers whilst working. The clinics motorbikes can be used for all work but volunteers will need to hire their own bike out of work hours.
