Project background

PhraThongIslandis located200 kmnorth of Phuket, in Kura Buri District, Phang Nga province. It is part of a group of three islands and is considered, even if there are only few turtles left, one of the main sea turtle nesting sites left along theAndamanSeacoast ofThailand. These sites are under pressure from fishing activities, egg poaching and uncontrolled tourism development.

 

Since 1996, Naucrates has been running a conservation project in collaboration with the Phuket Marine Biological Center (PMBC) with the help of many volunteers from all over the world who are coordinated by a field leader and assistants during each season. The main activities include monitoring nesting beaches, nest protection, behavioural observation, other surveys, environmental education, awareness and education in the village, and public awareness with visiting tourists. Specific tasks and responsibilities:

Main tasks are:

  • Volunteer coordination: organize daily activity in collaboration with the fieldleader, organize the logistic of the volunteers, transfers, transport on the island
  • Organise awareness activities and lessons for volunteers and visitors
  • Organise and/or conduct possible other project activities; fund raising activities, creation of materials for a displays at the conservation centre,  etc.
  • Conduct field work with the fieldleader; especially beach monitoring and behavioural observation
  • Collect data and supervise volunteers’ work
  • Training volunteers on field work methods, data collection
  • Write a daily diary about project activities
  • Organize additional project activities for volunteers

Additional tasks are:

  • Help field leader with other project tasks
  • Write weekly report of project activities with at least 5-10 photos to Naucrates main office
  • Write regular post for the website
  • Conduct opening/closing inventory and unpacking/packing of the field station
  • Keeping field station and staff accommodation tidy

In the end of the project period volunteer coordinator is required to write a final report and assist in data analysis of the project data. The report is due by the end of the working period.

 

Requirements:

  • Have experience in managing volunteers and coordinating them in turtle conservation projects or other fieldwork
  • Have good social and excellent communication skills
  • be able to conduct field work on the field
  • Be in very good physical condition and able walk long distances (min 10 kms a day) and work long hours under the heat of the sun
  • Be a responsible and mature person who is able to work with many different types of people with very different backgrounds and ages
  • Swimming ability
  • Be able to work in a very rustic and remote environment under hot and humid weather for the period of time
  • Have a firm commitment of stay for the chosen period (essential)
  • Have a good command of English language both spoken and written (mandatory)
  • Respect Naucrates rules and code of conduct on the Island

 

These skills are a plus, but not mandatory:

  • Possess a BSc in Biology or a related field, or be a student in a related field (e.g. biology, ecology, social sciences, environmental education)
  • Snorkelling/free diving skills
  • Arts & crafts skills
  • Teaching/educational experience
  • Thai language
  • Experience in living or working in Asia
  • Driving a motorbike/moped or a sidecar

 

Notes:

  • Any dietary restrictions or allergies should be communicated at the time of applying as some may not be possible to cater for
  • Applicants should also note that work days are 7 days a week, days off must be planned with the project leader.
  • Remoteness means no access to western comforts and very limited social life, lack of technically advanced tools and equipment and changing circumstances

Salary/Stipend or Expenses:
Assistants cover their own travel expenses to and from theIsland (including  international travel), their own visa expenses and travel insurance. Accommodation and food is provided at the Naucrates project camp
