Position starts on May 15, 2011 with a minimum of 6 month commitment.

Description:

The major role in this position is to assist in organizing the day to day running of the programs in the local schools and assist to manage our team of international volunteers (max 20).

Out three main areas of work in the community are general children's education assistance, English classes and teaching Sports as an extra curricular activity. Some of these are assisting the local teachers, while others are independently run classes by our volunteers. A main part of the work will be to oversee and assist the volunteers in preparing and running the lessons.

As the second community staff, you are responsible to assist the other staff in running the programs in Quepos. Responsibilities include assisting in Health & Safety management and implementation, organizing program logistics, volunteer management, compiling program reports and growing the projects within the community. This position reports to the program coordinator and the country director.
Most volunteers will be new to teaching, so they require guidance and introduction to the art of teaching children. Managing, instructing the volunteers, as well as overseeing their lesson preparation and their teaching methods are a vital part of the position.
Assisting in coordinating with the local teachers and other program partners is also a major part of the job, so good Spanish language knowledge is a must.

Qualifications required:

Applicants must have a solid level of Spanish and must not be afraid to use it. All communication in the community and with the children is in Spanish!
Previous teaching experience
Minimum of 1 year of professional work experience after college (or equivalent)
Awareness of health & safety issues
Self starting
Good understanding of community dynamics
Open minded
Team player as well as being able to work independently
Adaptable
Good sense of humor
Responsible and hard working
Group management experience
Current First Aid qualification

Highly desired: Environmental Education experience desirable but not compulsory if willing to learn

Conditions:

Long term contract is subject to succesful 4 week paid trial period in country.

In field food and accommodation is included.

Staff to provide transport to project site and personal medical insurance, including air evacuation & repatriation.
