Description

COFFEE FOR CONSERVATION - BARISTA WANTED ON A TROPICAL ISLAND!

We are looking for a passionate and enthusiastic, barista-trained individual to join Island Watch Conservation Initiative.

Our organisation is involved with monitoring nesting sea turtles, protecting their nests, coral reef management, education and outreach.

This is a great opportunity for someone travelling, with barista skills, looking to learn about marine conservation and get involved with an exciting new project coming under the umbrella of the Lang Tengah Turtle Watch organisation (www.langtengahturtlewatch.org).

To see the work we have been doing visit:

THE ROLE

We are looking for someone who will help to run our small start-up coffee stall – a new initiative we are embarking upon to try and generate revenue and awareness for our conservation projects.

You will be required to prepare and serve coffee to tourists, from our handmade, wooden stall, stationed at a beachfront location, only a 3-minute walk from our accommodation and project base at The Resthouse, Perhentian (http://www.langtengahturtlewatch.org/perhentian-house/). The stall will also sell Island Watch merchandise, to help raise further funds for the marine conservation projects.

As this is a start-up venture for a conservation organisation, it is an unpaid position, with accommodation and food provided.

Note: However, this position’s compensation will include a percentage of profits.

As well as the coffee stall, you will get the opportunity to be involved with our conservation work, as well as also having free time to explore island life.

Accommodation

We are located on the small and very beautiful island Pulau Perhentian Besar, within the Terengganu marine reserve, Malaysia, on a private promontory, nestled within the grounds of The Resthouse (http://www.langtengahturtlewatch.org/perhentian-house/).

You will be living in an open air camp, alongside conservation volunteers, and will able to learn about the work they do and also get involved.

Food will be supplied for camp and meals will be served on camp, near to the coffee stall, and all volunteers will cook on a rota basis.

Requirements

-       Knowledge/experience making coffee and how brewing equipment operates

-       Preferably barista trained

-       Good customer service skills

-       Sociable person

-       Can live in shared basic accommodation

-       Willing to talk to customers about Island Watch Conservation Initiative and sell merchandise on the stall

-       Happy to share knowledge and train our other volunteers to make coffees

-       Willing to work 6 hours per day (a few hours in the morning and a few hours in the afternoon)

-       Willing to get involved in our conservation activities that include, but aren’t limited to:

-       Terrestrial and marine surveys

-       Night patrols for nesting turtle mothers

-       Outreach with tourists and local community members

-       Beach clean-ups

Dates

The coffee stall will be open from 29thMarch 2019 – 30thSeptember 2019

We ask for a minimum commitment of 2 months and we welcome you to stay longer.

If you would like to apply for this position, please email your C.V. and details of your relevant experience and reasons for wanting to volunteer with us to: volunteer.iwci@gmail.com

We look forward to hearing from you!
