Reef HQ Aquarium, Townsville has a number of designated work groups within which casual employment opportunities exist for Visitor Services Officers (VSO). If applications are successful, casual employees are appointed to non-ongoing casual contracts until 30 June 2014.
Work is determined by operational requirements within designated work groups. An ability to work in more than one designated work group is desirable but not essential.
Please note: A condition of employment is Australian citizenship.
However, under certain circumstances the GBRMPA will consider
non-Australian citizens for casual positions with Reef HQ.
To facilitate consideration for citizenship exemption for these
positions, non-Australian applicants are required to provide
copies of current passport and working visas with their applications.
Applicants must supply:
- A cover letter that clearly states the casual position/s
they wish to apply for
- A copy of their résumé that demonstrates their ability to meet the specific
position criteria listed
- A copy of relevant certification (where applicable).
A) VSO - SCUBA Divers
Reef HQ Aquarium is the world's largest living coral reef
aquarium. The Living Systems Team requires casual
divers/aquarists to assist with diving duties. Highly
suitable applicants would have:
- SCUBA diving certification (preferably advanced open water diver or above)
- A current Occupational Diving Medical (AS2299.1)
- A current Senior First Aid Certificate, including current CPR and Oxygen Administration training
- Experience working as a diver (commercial, recreational
industry or scientific)
- Experience working in an aquarium or aquaculture
- Extensive knowledge of marine science.
B) VSO - Education
Reef HQ Aquarium is the National Education Centre for the
Great Barrier Reef. Reef Education programs are facilitated
to students at all stages of learning. Highly suitable applicants
would:
- Hold or be willing to apply for a "Blue Card" issued by the
Commission for Children and Young People and Child
Guardian and indicates that a person is eligible to work
with children and young people in Queensland
- Have a very good understanding of the marine environment
- Be willing to work overnight when required
- Possess Scuba diving qualifications (preferable but not essential).
C) VSO - Retail (Admissions Desk, Waterview Cafe, and Reef
In-store Gift Shop)
Reef HQ Aquarium prides itself on providing world class customer experiences and services.
Highly suitable applicants would:
- Demonstrate strong customer service focus
- Be able to work flexible hours including weekends
- Have previous retail experience (Food Handlers and
Barista Certificates, highly desirable)
- Have previous experience in cash handling and till
reconciliation (essential).
D) VSO - Lucky T Turtle (Reef HQ Aquarium's Mascot)
Lucky T Turtle is the ever loveable Reef HQ Aquarium mascot
that receives 'rock-star' attention whenever it makes an
appearance. Highly suitable applicants would:
- Be a minimum of 180 cm and maximum of 185 cm tall
- Hold or be willing to apply for a "Blue Card" issued by
the Commission for Children and Young People and Child
Guardian and indicates that a person is eligible to work
with children and young people in Queensland
- Be able to work flexible hours including evenings and
weekends
- Be openly creative.
