Description

International Fund for Animal Welfare

Vice President of Communications, Marketing, and Development

(Location Flexible)

Founded in 1969 in Canada and in the United Kingdom in 1981, the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) saves individual animals, animal populations, and habitats all over the world. With projects in more than 40 countries and an operating budget of over $126 million, IFAW provides hands-on assistance to animals in need, whether dogs and cats, wildlife and livestock, or rescuing animals in the wake of disasters. IFAW also advocates saving populations from cruelty and depletion, such as its campaign to end commercial whaling and seal hunts.

The International Fund for Animal Welfare is both a conservation and an animal welfare organization. It cares about protecting endangered populations of wildlife and preventing individual animal suffering. IFAW is also an organization that cares about sustainable development, community livelihoods, and ensuring community safety.

All the critical threats facing animals today are due to people: habitat loss, climate change, human-wildlife conflict, unsustainable hunting, illegal wildlife trade, cruelty. Addressing these issues means drawing upon a unique combination of social advocacy and science, local community development, and national and international capacity building. IFAW's experience working at all levels, from the very local village to the largest international conventions, perfectly positions the organization to draw sometimes distinct threads of charitable work together into a stronger, cohesive approach that can sustain both animals and people.

IFAW seeks candidates for the role of Vice President of Communications, Marketing, and Development (Vice President). Reporting to the president and CEO, the Vice President provides cutting-edge, strategic leadership on all of IFAW's communications, marketing, branding, and development activities that advance public and private support. As a key member of the executive leadership team, the Vice President will conceive and implement innovative marketing strategies across all media platforms to elevate IFAW's brand awareness globally, while advancing integrated fundraising efforts. S/he will articulate a clear vision for how to communicate the essence of IFAW's mission and brand by guiding the creation of compelling stories about the work IFAW performs around the world. The Vice President will increase IFAW's broad base of support in order to further develop a strong pipeline of potential donors, especially those with capacity for major gifts. S/he must foster new levels of donor engagement and continue to advance the culture of philanthropy across the organization. Given IFAW's philanthropic ambitions, the Vice President must continue to increase the overall sophistication of the development program and the diversification its revenues.

The Vice President oversees global media outreach, advertising, collateral, promotions and other initiatives to drive familiarity, favorability, and preference for the organization's brand, while advancing key organizational objectives, including fundraising, influencing key stakeholders, and engaging in strategic partnerships. The Vice President will work closely with the president and CEO to create integrated, strategic plans and corresponding goals for communications, marketing, and development reflecting the larger strategic goals of the institution. The Vice President supervises an overall staff of approximately 88 (28 in communications and marketing, 60 in development), including six direct reports (comprising the newly created deputy vice presidents for communications, marketing, development, and institutional giving, respectively; the director of finance and operations, philanthropy; and the director of marketing technology and analytics) and staff based in country or regional offices. S/he will be empowered to optimize the organizational design/functional alignment of the team in consultation with the president and CEO. The location of the position is flexible, potentially including, but not limited to Washington, DC; Yarmouth Port, Massachusetts; and London, England.

The Vice President will marshal these resources to significantly increase awareness, contributed revenue, high impact partnerships, and powerful connections with IFAW's existing stakeholders and emerging constituencies. IFAW seeks an innovator in advancement who has deep experience in communications and marketing, and is able to effectively leverage complementary advancement functions through strategic, forward-thinking integration. S/he must be a solutions-based leader who champions strategic, data-informed decision-making, industry best practices, and an ethos of continuous improvement and transparency. The successful candidate will be a proven leader, manager, mentor, and collaborative colleague who is comfortable leading major initiatives and supporting the leadership of others, and has a track record of effectively leading organizational change.

Required qualifications and experience: dedication to the mission and goals of IFAW, and credible knowledge of current issues related to conservation and animal welfare; bachelor's degree in business, marketing, communications or a related field, advanced degree preferred; minimum of 15 years of experience in progressively responsible leadership positions in communications, marketing, and/or development, preferably within a major nonprofit organization related to conservation and/or animal welfare, other nonprofit organization, educational institution, cultural organization, or other environment of similar complexity; demonstrated ability to provide management oversight, leadership, and direction with at least 10 years of significant supervisory experience, including experience creating and managing a budget; must be steeped in modern philanthropy best practices and able to effectively integrate advancement functions; must have the breadth of skills required to devise macro-level external relations strategies, inclusive of organizational branding, communications, marketing, and development; demonstrated ability in planning and executing integrated, strategic communications and marketing in support of achieving programmatic, organizational, fundraising, and event goals to support a multi-location, global organization; a sophisticated understanding of how to effectively leverage various communication mediums and distribution channels for optimal exposure and impact, including leveraging emerging trends and technology, crafting effective digital strategies, and architecting an engaging user experience online and within social media platforms; strength in developing the case for support and strategic, complex, and innovative fundraising plans, and executing against those plans to achieve goals and objectives; hands-on experience with six and seven-figure gifts and greater is preferred, including cultivation through solicitation and stewardship, as well as experience working with annual giving strategies; experience identifying, nurturing, and motivating volunteers; skill at goal setting and measuring success, and agility in addressing alternate program directions to meet goals when necessary; ability to extract and analyze data to make effective, efficient decisions about donor strategy and process; experience in international fundraising and the cultural sensitivity it requires.
